Why are couple called partner.

Firstly I thought it's because they have to do thing in a submissive way and share opinion. But I would like to know why more from other .

Couple----partner. They could are joined together through marriage they are expected to do everything in common, they become shareholder in decisions affairs, financial affairs and any other affairs.
