5 Hours X's 3 Kids is NO FUN!

I mentioned in an earlier post that last week was very busy. This week has been no exception. It is the week before school starts. Lots of things have to get done and I have accomplished several. I had to get Lil Keith a physical form filled out for football. I turned in the paperwork last week when we went to the twins' Asthma Clinic and was suppose to pick them up this week. Lil Keith needed an NC state ID card. Open House at school for all 3 boys. M-Thursday football practice nightly. New Speech Therapy sessions for twins with new speech therapist. So, in order to save driving time and gas I decided to pick up the physical from from the doctors office and get Lil K's ID on the same day. In our state we have a shortage of people working at the DMV and drivers license offices across the entire state. More popluated areas such as the state capital and the larger cities have waiting lines that go out the door and into the parking lots. People have to sit outside in the heat for hours waiting on line to get their ID's or drivers licenses made. Well the people in the more populated areas seek out smaller substations in other counties to cut down on the wait time. Thus started our day off in the wrong direction. I got the kids up at 6:30 so that we could eat and get to the local DMV before they open at 8am. We got there at 7:30 and the line was all the way to the parking lot and several peoople had been there since 6am to get to be the first in line. They even brought camp chairs to sit in. The office opens at 8am but the lady did not open the door until 8:10. Upon opening the door she asked anyone that had a set appointment to come in and log in on the computer and pull their ticket. After that she announced that everyone else could come in and pull a ticket and said that there was no way everyone was going to fit into the waiting area and said that when the chairs filled up anyone else had to wait outside. By this time we had already been in line for an hour. The sun was moving and the shade was disappearing. Now, it was hot already at 87 degrees with 99 % humidity. She seemed to have an attitude even though she had just opened the doors. I cannot stand in that hot heat for hours on end with the crazy reaction/rash I have on my face to heat and sun. So, me and the kids left and headed to the doctors office to pick up the physical. We get there and they tell me that they cannot fill out the form because it is too close to his annual physical date. I kind of wished they had told me that before I drove down there. Needless to say, I made an appointment for his yearly exam and the twins yearly as well. After that, I took them to McDonalds to get a small snack and let them play. They had been so good while waiting in that hot line at the dmv. After they played for an hour I decided to check out the other dmv agency office that was near by. We got lucky. There was no line out the door and the parking spots were not all gone. We went in and the lobby was almost full but I checked in and found one empty seat. The boys sat on the floor. We ended up sitting there for 5 hours. I must say that they did pretty good but there were times when we had problems. Elijah had a meltdown and had to sit in my lap and he cried. For some reason Elijah and Lil Keith kept arguing with each other. Adam was the only one that I did not have to argue with or get on very much. They all three brought toys to play with. We finally were seen and got Lil Keith's ID card and we were able to get home and cool off. I made sandwiches for supper and we had to go to the Open House at the school for all 3 boys. Thankfully, hubby was home and went with us. We visited all of the classrooms and teachers, I got the mound of paperwork that I have to fill out this weekend for all 3 of them. After leaving school we had to take Lil Keith to football practice which lasted until 8:15. It was a long and tiring day. I almost gave up on getting Lil Keith's ID but I am glad we checked at the second DMV office. I will say that 5 hours waiting with 3 kids is not fun. I count my blessings that it was all inside with the AC and I had a chair to sit in! It is Friday, how has your week been?

Thats crazy, I am glad I don't have to do all that with my little's anymore, now I do it with the grand kids but not to that extent. So glad you got to sit inside and not in the sun, its too hot to be outside, you could have gotten heat stroke.

@cintol There were several first-time drivers there that were trying to get their permits or their driver's license before school started back. I guess I should also mention that I live in a military town and several military folks were there as well.

Dang, I'd hate to go through what you did. So far TX doesn't seem to have those kinds of problems except at the SS offices.

@rebalann Our SS offices are bad too but the thing about them is they have big waiting areas that are cooled or heated depending on the weather. Some of the smaller driver license offices have small waiting areas.

I haven't needed to go to the DMV in a few years so I'm not sure what I'll be up against next time @Shellyann36

Holy cow, Shelley Ann, I've never heard of such long lines before. Doesn't your state offer getting all of that online? Or maybe that is more for renewals and such? The longest I think I've waited is an hour or so and that was years ago after 9/11 when we head to great my mom an enhanced license to cross into Canada easily. We waited in line and had to return a different day with extra info for we discovered what we though was a birth certificate wasn't and had to find old mail to prove her identity. Normally, even on busy days my wait time is maybe twenty minutes or so not hours and hours. When I can I do mine online. (I would like to suggest you split up those longer paragraphs to make it easier on your readers eyes, even at this late date. I've never heard of a child needing a state ID to play sports. How old is lil Keith?

They do offer online services for certain things but this was Lil Keith's first ID and we had to be there. He is playing football and the league wants ID's to assure that older kids are not playing in the younger ranks. I guess it is a big deal in the state and certain teams have taken advantage and placed older boys on teams meant for younger players.

@Shellyann36 it's odd that parents or adults would allow that enough that they'd have the need to have IDs. At least now you know if other kids off you're will play similar sports to maybe get those earlier in the year and maybe the lines won't be atrocious.

Admire you for doing all that with those kids. I had a busy week (as usual), but the coming week is going to be busier unfortunately.

Football practice 4 days a week seems like a lot! That is awful what a shortage they have at the DMV so people have to wait so long especially outside in the heat! Then 5 hours at the other DMV ugh how awful! How annoying you drove to the doctors for nothing! Most McDonald's around here don't have the play areas anymore. What a day you had my goodness

That's crazy wait times. I'm glad you got the ID and it went okay if not perfect. I'm glad you had the A/C and a chair at the second DMV. My week has been a good one.

Oh jeez. I would never wait 5 hours, not even 2.5. That's just craziness. Glad you were finally able to get the ID though. Must have felt good getting it after all that wait. Dr's definitely should have told you that last week, tsk tsk.

@FayeHazel it all turned out alright. The kids did reasonably well and we got it all accomplished. This is one that is going down in the Mom Awards book though!
