"that all man are created equal" ?

United States

Earlier today I came across an article posted on the Fox News website. The title of the article is, Americans should stop demonizing each other and appreciate our differences. Written by Joe Battaglia. The story was good and told about why his father had come to American. But while reading the article, I came to one paragraph that I do not agree with. Everyone has their viewpoints on this subject, in which many people disagree, including me. Here is the paragraph as written by Joe Battaglia.: That heartfelt yearning is exemplified best in these stirring lines of the Declaration of Independence: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” Unless you have been living under a rock some were, you know this isn't true for all people. If all men are created equal, the Native Americans would not have been about wiped out and then the rest forced to live on reservations, slavery would not have occurred and those from China would not have been put in camps. I am old enough to have attended school during segregation and desegregation, I remember the era of Jim Crow laws and the civil rights movement. When I was real little our family lived in Government housing in Florida, even thought they were the same type of house, there was a tall fence that divided the white residents from the Black residents. I have witnessed many forms of racism during my lifetime. For example: I had went to a department store and heard a black woman ask the clerk if they took checks, she told the woman no, I thought well maybe I misunderstood what she said, so when I got ready to check out, I asked the same thing. And the clerk told me yes, I walked out of the store thinking, wow, you can accept a check from a white woman, but not a black woman! I paid cash for my items, but I should have just walked out and not bought anything. So when it says in the Declaration of Independence "that all men are created equal" to whom are they talking about?

Well we are all equal in the fact that we were created equal. Humans like to destroy one another and that is fact. Sad.

That's what I say, just be happy and live your own life. I sometimes think that until the day comes that people takes responsibility for their own actions and stop blaming everyone else, things will always be the same as for as this goes in this Country.

They are talking about all humans. The events allowed by government don't change that. They are simply violations. Mankind however has always been equal in oppression. There is no group of people on this Earth that is innocent.

@sweetashoney Just because some people do some bad things, it doesn't change the good intentions meant. The Bible says all men are equal. I'm sure a lot of those slave owner/racists called themselves Christians. Does their actions make the Bible bad? No it's on them. The DOI says all men are equal. It doesn't say anywhere "Except for these people."

@redhotpogo You are absolutely right. In the eyes of God, All men were created equal. But, see I'm not talking about the Bible here. I am talking about the Declaration of Independence here. The fact still remains that it was written during the time of slavery. No it does not say "except for these people" anywhere. Blacks in the South were considered a person's property back then. I know each one of us has different view points on this subject, and to tell the truth I really enjoy discussing this with you.

Well all I got to say is,the Declaration was signed in 1776 during the time of slavery. I bet them people didn't have any rights or fill like they were equal or for that fact even had the right to Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. So how can they be talking about all humans.

I think God created all of us equal. It's humankind that has destroyed that over the centuries.

You got that right! It's sad to know that even in the time, so many people believe they are better than other races or even people of their own race.
