Dollar Stores

I've found that although you can save money at dollar stores, this is not always the case. I shopped at a local dollar store here recently and bought a bar of Dove soap for $1 (along with some other stuff). I checked the cheapest price of Dove at my local grocery store (HEB) where you could buy a 10 pack for $10.72 before taxes, so at first glance, it appears the price at the dollar store was slightly cheaper. However, when I got home, I realized that the bar of Dove at the dollar store was of much smaller size than the ones in the 10 pack at the grocery store, so on a per ounce basis, the grocery store price was actually cheaper!

I'm planning to buy at a dollar store, thanks for reminding me about your experience, this will help me to be more attentive when buying to that shop hmm.. maybe that is why most of their products are so cheap unlike to supermarkets or mall

Sure, glad my post was helpful. I think most of the stuff in the dollar store are cheaper, but there are a few items which are more expensive. Maybe this is how they add a bit of profit to their bottom line...

@john340720 somehow sometimes these dollar shops are tricky until we really study about the item

Hi Mavic, Initially I bought the soap from the dollar store, but when I realized that it was actually cheaper at the grocery store, the next time I bought the 10 pack from the grocery store!

You are right. Not everything in the $ store is cheaper than regular stores. I am always careful to compare prices.

Yes, very true. I always just assumed because the items were at the dollar store, they would always be cheaper, but this is not always true.

Yes there are some tricks to selling things out that it looks like they are cheaper by face value but when you dig deep you’ll see its not cheap at all.

I buy some things at dollar stores, but nothing like toilet paper, paper towels, soap or groceries. I have found that you get better deals for things like that at Walmart. Mostly what I buy at dollar stores are seasonal stuff that I use for my craft projects.

They are good for some items but you are right about the smaller sizes. Also they may not always stock the same items consistently.

The grocery store is not usual cheaper. If you only need one or two bars of soap, you spend more money by buying the ten pack.

It's the same as any discount store, even Costco. You have to know your prices
