I bought a little jug

When my husband went to Nepal a few years ago I took the opportunity to clear out a lot of cupboards and drawers. I went through almost every storage area in the house and was able to donate or toss out many items which we no longer had any use for. I had some pretty cup, saucer and plate sets. Any that were missing part of their set went in the op shop box (op shop = thrift shop). I was surprised to find that a favourite Royal Doulton ‘English Roses’ set was missing a saucer. I couldn’t remember breaking it. After much soul-searching, I decided the cup wasn’t any good without the saucer so the two items went in the op shop bag. Needless to say a week later I found the saucer. I went back to the thrift shop but the items had already been disposed of. I was very disappointed as I had really liked the little set. From time to time I’d kick myself that I hadn’t waited another day or two before disposing of the pieces. Yesterday we called into an antique fair just to fill in some time and one of the items on sale was a small Royal Doulton English Roses jug. It didn't take me long to decide it had my name on it. I bought it and will now stop fretting about the cup, saucer and plate. This little jug was made in England. Nowadays the same pattern is made in China although it still carries the Royal Doulton tag. The green jug and saucer in the photo is one my mother china painted. I love the shape of both of these.

That means you have 'tray' service which means you have the teapot, sugar and milk jug system in your house We no longer do that. The tea gets into a flask and we do add and sugar from the sugar tin and milk from the milk vessel. No time for what we used to do in the good old days - no maids to fuss around.

@JudyEv Tea sets are now adorning our show case and so do dinner sets and a whole lot of glasses meant for different things

Tea-bags just about did away with teapots. I have sugar in a sugar bowl but milk is just added from a plastic container in the fridge. You're right - no-one has time for the niceties now.

@allknowing We were given a lot of different types of glasses as wedding gifts but we don't use them all.

They're gorgeous! I'm sorry you found the saucer after you gave the cup to the thrift shop.

They are very pretty. I am bad about getting rid of things that is missing a piece and then find the missing piece later on.

@JudyEv It is funny how that happens. I have done things like that also. I am learning to wait before I get rid of things just because I can't find the other piece.

@velvet53 I've learnt too - just a bit too late for that particular set.

It was really silly as I did think I should have had the saucer somewhere. I didn't remember breaking it.

This is very nice, I have found some in the apartment of my mother, but I have donated. My cabinets are full. Tomorrow I go through our crystal glasses and some must go.

@JudyEv There are too many and I cannot see why we keep so many glasses, dishes, pots and pans.

@LadyDuck I have got rid of a lot and once we stop having concerts I will get rid of a lot more. When we cater for a large number of people I need the big pots and pans, serving dishes, etc.

@JudyEv - How adorable! I have also given things away before, only to wish I had kept them. However, I can't keep everything!

@DeborahDiane It's sitting on top of a china cabinet at the moment. I like to switch my bits and pieces around from time to time. It makes me take more notice of them.

If I'd kept the two just a day or two longer, I'd still have the whole set but that's okay. I love my little jug.

@Janet357 They are for milk and/or cream. The tea would be in a teapot and guests would help themselves to milk/cream and sugar.

They are very pretty indeed. I have some blue willow patterened mugs and plates that look something like that. They were made in England.

Those are lovely little jugs. Too bad everything is made in China now, but you were lucky to find one that was made in England. Probably don't see that much anymore.

@JudyEv I just assume everything is made in China nowadays. It is a shame. Even our American flags are made in China.

All the Royal Doulton and Beswick ornaments are made in China. And Border Arts. It's a great shame.

I saw similar stuff from many charity stores. I bought a similar one from a 99 cent store a long time ago and still have it somewhere I think. (I like your mother green jug. It looks much better than the other one.)

Oh that Royal Doulton is so lovely Judy I have always loved it. I bought my dear Mother RIP a huge tea mug and saucer that you cannot get anymore in Royal Doulton once. Do not know where it went.

I'm sure you love your dinner set. It's such a lovely pattern but I can't work out what is so attractive about it. I mean there are dozens of patterns with roses but this has always seemed special.
