This morning when I looked out of my front window I noticed several sunflower stalks with a bud on each one. Now, I know we didn't plant any sunflowers yet, there they were. We feed the birds Black Oil Sunflower seeds and apparently our birds and squirrels (who run up and steal them) have been quite sloppy with their eating. The sunflower seeds planted themselves and are now about to bloom. I can't wait until they do. I'll have to be quick to see them because the birds will strip the flowers bare. I love the cycles of Mother Nature.

I love it when things come up of their own accord. I hope the birds leave the flowers alone for a little while while you enjoy them.

@HazySue No, in a fruit tree, they just take a peck out of each one to see if it's ready or not.

@JudyEv So do I. I have always loved the wildflower type garden they create. I don't think the birds will wait for long.

That's exactly what happens. I now have daffodils growing in the woods. Of course in the spring.

I had them one year at our other house. The birds would wait until the seeds began to ripen before they would eat them. The gold finches looked very decorative perched in the middle of the flowers having snacks.

We had a couple "volunteer" sunflowers this year. Not too surprising because I put a seed mix out in our well planter for the birds and squirrels. Sunflower seeds are in that. Actually I'm surprised we don't get more of those growing. They're so pretty and cheerful!

My birds eat the heck out of sunflower seeds and then thank us by leaving behind the means for Mother Nature to make more.
