Labor is prior to, and independent of, capital. Capital is only the fruit of labor, and could never have existed if labor had not first existed. Labor is the superior of capital, and deserves much the higher consideration.
-- Abraham Lincoln
If any man tells you he loves America, yet hates labor, he is a liar. If any man tells you he trusts America, yet fears labor, he is a fool.
-- Abraham Lincoln
"Workers of the world awaken. Break your chains, demand your rights. All the wealth you make is taken, by exploiting parasites. Shall you kneel in deep submission from your cradle to your grave. Is the height of your ambition to be a good and willing slave?"
----Joe Hill
All wealth is the product of labor.
John Locke
I spent a lot of time this weekend trying to think up some big important things to say about Labor Day and I was making some tremendous progress. As far as you know.
Then, my Editor-In-Chief, Style Manual, said, "A lot of very good, very talented people have already come up with some great Labor Day quotes. Why don't you just use a few of them?"
That made a lot of sense because it occurred to me, who am I to upstage people like Abe Lincoln and John Locke? I should be big about this by letting them have their moment of glory. Even though I could do a much better job. It's the very same reason I don't write songs. It would be wrong to make the whole world forget about Lennon and McCartney just because I can write better songs.
So that's what I'm doing. I'm sitting back and letting others take the spotlight. I hope they inspire you to vote and protest and make your voice heard so we can stop and then reverse the current state of sad affairs we're living in where labor and everything else is concerned...even though they can't inspire you as well as I could have.
Just one more before we go. One from my old friend, Soph:
Without labor nothing prospers.
Sophocles

Thank you, and I hope you're doing the same.
It's really hot and muggy here but I am making the best of it by staying inside in the AC.

@just4him Sometimes it gets a little cold for me inside too, for the same reason. But not this weekend. It's plenty hot enough to prevent that.

@xander6464 Same here, though having the A/C on all night so I could get a decent night's sleep has left the house cool and I'm sitting here in a sweater.

Your post inspired me to look more into Labor day. When I first heard of Labor day as a kid nobody ever really explained it to m except to say it did not mean I had to do extra chores. Sadly it doesn't get much attention around here which just reinforced my thinking that it's not important. I hope when children ask about Labor day, the parents will explain properly.

Unfortunately, I don't think its' real purpose and meaning get much attention anywhere.

@xander6464 it is the nearest we get to it, though many dislike Mayday's pagan roots so it often gets under-played and there are few parades

@arthurchappell We have a lot of that Pagan prejudice here, too. I don't understand it.

You do have May Day. It's not official in the UK but it has been unofficially linked to International Worker's Day, which a lot of the rest of the world has at the same time. And since it's unofficial, it would be nice if they created an official Labor Day now so you could have a three day holiday at the end of summer just like us.

Excuse me 1%--in order to celebrate or be part of Labor Day you have had to work which doesn't mean begging for a new jet plane--it means making the plane!!

Just like the Lord I serve, I work in strange and mysterious ways!
BTW, jet planes don't grow on trees, you know. Send me a check!
