Yesterday, I was reading a French article and I came across this expression 'avoir une mémoire d'éléphant' which means 'have a memory like an elephant'.
According to Cambridge Dictionary to have a memory like an elephant (as opposite to have a memory like a sieve) means 'to be able to remember things easily and for a long period of time'.
So the reason why a perfect memory is compared to an elephant memory is because an elephant never forgets.
I found this expression really funny because I have a very bad memory, which gets me into trouble some times and I don't what to do.
What about you guys ? Do have a memory like an elephant or like a sieve ?

These expressions are also well-known in German. My memory is very good but it is a fact that a memory doesn't stay good forever. Old people lose the possibility of remembering things that happened in the recent past but can recount things that happened in their childhood and youth many, many decades ago.

I have more like an elephant. I am able to remember a lot and remember it for long.

@august18 It happens with me sometimes when I am too overwhelmed with things happening around or when I am too exhausted.
