Emmett (@Platespinner) has written about her hen and the chicks she has given it to rear. It reminded me of our neighbour of many years ago. Her bantams were always getting out. One made her nest in a hayshed among the bales of hay. One little hen hatched out eight chickens but one got tangled up in the long, wet grass and was in a bad way when I found it.
I dropped it into a woolly sock, folded it over and placed it on a hot water bottle. When I shook it out a little later, I'd nearly cooked the poor little thing. It had come back to life but had its beak open, panting. I gave it a little water off the end of a teaspoon and settled it down again.
It turned out to be a little hen which we called The Beak. In the evenings, she would sit in the crook of our ankle in front of the fire and go to sleep. She also liked to flap her way up onto our shoulder. I imagine this would be instinctive behaviour for a bantam as they like to roost high in the trees out of reach of foxes and dogs.
My son had joined several rubber bands together and dragged it past The Beak. She must have thought it was the biggest worm she'd ever seen as she grabbed hold of it, dug her toes in and refused to let go. We could pick her up off the ground and swing her in circles but she wouldn’t give up her worm. Eventually we gave her to my mum and she raised several lots of chickens.
Unfortunately I don't have a photo of The Beak but this photo is of a duck we saw in South Australia. Don’t you just love her hairdo?

@JudyEv With the blow drying and the styling, I bet it would take her an hour or so!

@toniganzon I should think so. I wonder if she slept in curlers. I had a friend who would exhibit chickens and he would blow-dry their feathers after he had washed them.

@JudyEv I had a black bantam as a teenager. She was dads best setter but he could not check or add eggs to her. I always had to do that. She would try to tear his hand up while she just lightly pinched mine while I raised her up. I was constantly carrying her around when she was a baby.

@wolfgirl569 Some really don't like you checking their nests. I always let my mother do it.

The duck in the photo looks so well groomed...she has a nice hair style.
Beak seems so interesting and you all must be too fond of it's stories.

What a beautiful experience you had with the great Beak! Yes the animals really don't know who are their parents and their origin all they understand is love! With the age they reflect their natural instincts, but still they love the ones around who are responsible to raise them! I felt very happy and I sincerely appreciate your love towards the nature! Stay blessed dear friend!

@JudyEv, Wow! That is so nice to hear! We had a baby monkey on the farm which got strayed from the group and it has become the pet on the farm. She was very attached with me. The moment she used to locate me she used to come running and sit om my shoulder and search my shirt pockets for her toffee! she used to like toffees! Animls are verylovely and adorable, especially when they are wild and turn as pets!

Thank you. Yes, most animals make great pets if they are cared for and loved. We had a pet turkey gobbler who never, ever got savage. He always came up to greet visitors and if Mum gave him a hug his wattles would go bright red as though he were blushing.

Beautiful memory this one. She survived that hot water bottle treatment you gave her and that was neat.

@allknowing She was so cold she was nearly stiff and I was really worried for her so she went from one extreme to the next.

I was gonna say "that isn't a chicken" haha. I love this picture, that's one majestic looking duck. The Beak sounds really lovable, to me. I think it's nice you let your mum have her for company.
