Early planting season for The Horse

As my balcony corn and sunflowers die off (one green plant is still doing quite well), I'm starting to plant some snow pea seeds in my planters. I know it's a bit early, but I want to see if they will survive into Fall and Winter. Green beans prefer the hot Summer months. Snow peas seem to enjoy our cooler (but not cold) Winter months. They are also frost-resistant. Here's a relaxing evening balcony scene from several months ago. You can see some snow peas getting slightly tired in the background, while green beans, corn, and sunflowers get their start in the foreground. So this must have been March or so. Will you continue to do some "gardening" through the Winter?

Last week I got the kale, collards, turnip and mustard greens planted in the garden, they will grow and feed me all winter. IF we ever get rain, we are dry.

No rain here either. Do you plant seed? Or starts?

@andriaperry I sometimes start my seeds in little cups on my balcony so the wee beasties won't get them.

In Mauritius there is only 2 season summer and winter and since it's a tropical island winter isn't really an issue to plant veg and flowers. Just plant some flowers and herbs this week.

@BabeSays Do people grow corn there? That's one of my favorites. But I like tropical fruit as well.

There is not a lot we can do here during winter. In a couple of month the snow will cover the ground. I plant potatoes, they grow underground, the snow is not a problem.

@TheHorse The first time it was not intentional. I had a couple of sprouted potatoes in the kitchen, instead of throwing them, I decided to plant them in the garden. It was a nice surprise to pick up very good potatoes a few months later. Now, every time that I find a sprouted potato, I plant it.

@LadyDuck If I had a larger garden space, I would do the same.

That is interesting to know! I've never tried growing potatoes.

You're right. Its a good time to plant chard and peas before the frost hits.

@sallypup Hmm. Maybe I will try again. But I like snow peas better anyway.

Do regular peas do as well as snow peas? I couldn't get regular peas to grow well last Winter. But the snow peas did fine.

I've been trying to think of what to plant. What doesn't require a lot of attention but does well during our winters? I'm pondering broccoli.

Snow peas for sure. I think broccoli might work as well. Some people do herbs, but I'm not an herb expert.

Wow, a virtual "Pea Pod" festival on your balcony! Good luck with the winter crop Once all my summer tomatoes are picked I shut it down for the Fall, to cold.... The only thing I'll be finding in my garden then will be leaves and acorns

Don't eat the acorns before you boil off the toxins. I don't know how to do that. The Indians here did.

Only what I can grow inside. Our winters get too cold for anything outside.

I find it really satisfying. But it sounds like you have quite the busy life. It's one of my "meditative" activities--a way to escape the "drama" of being a teacher and psychologist.

Snow peas, broccoli, spring onions, lettuces, parsley, mandarins, lemons and oranges did quite well through winter. I will be planing a magnolia Little Gem tree sometime soon. Good luck with your early planting in autumn!

Thank you! How cold are the coldest nights where you live? I worry about the occasional night-time freeze we have here.

No space for gardening in my flat.
