Kindness rocks

Last year our guidance counselor did a neat activity with all of the kids.
She painted lots of rocks in bright colors, then each student got to choose a rock to paint a message on. Positive messages.
When the detail painting was dry she sealed them with a clear sealer.
All last year they were on display in her room.
Over the summer the custodial staff added a lot of white marble rocks to a flower bed, then our kindness rocks were added to it.
Some people say it reminds them of Easter eggs. It reminds me of smiles from last year.
I have shared a big picture here of part of the rock bed.

A lot of communities have the rock hiding activities, but this makes a big impact to have them all out here.

Wonder what would happen if the kids got to paint some angry rocks

There would be a few, I am sure. In our very small classroom we talk about "zones" of our feelings. All feelings are allowed, but we have tools to help us get back to being happy and calm.

I love the idea of teachers painting them and then the kids doing messages.

Having the rocks already base coated in colors allowed plenty of time for everyone to be able to do one. I think originally they wanted to put them at the Senior Center or the Library but could not get permission. I like having the rocks right at the front of the school to remind the kids to be kind and positive.

Yes, we do. We spend a lot of time at school trying to motivate towards the positive.

I like to think so. I was with the student E_____ and he does not do a lot of writing and spelling, but he wanted to put out his message to smile.

After reading your post, I zoomed the picture to read those positive messages and I could read a few. The best one is so simple, it just says SMILE.
It was really a great idea.

The one that just says smile was done by a student I was working with. He speaks very few words, but he will always give you a smile, and tell you he is happy. I like the blue one that says Happiness can be found anywhere.

Awww, that is a special rock bed.
Now lets hope no one gets mad and throws them at someone.

We are pretty well policed on the school grounds. These are not on the playground, thankfully.

Certain small rocks grab my attention and I have a couple waiting for their messages.
