My theme for today is school

This year there is a lot of changes at my sons cyber school. I am teaching him history through the online/offline lessons. For some reason he only has 3 live classes each day and history isn’t one. The computer was so messed when we first got it. Seemed like I knew my way around the computer more then tech support so I got it working better on my own. A hassle is the teachers have assigned so many different sites to use so we have a million passwords to write down and learn how to use each site. I discovered on the second day of classes that my friends daughter is in classes with my son. I had no idea she was doing cyber school this year so it’s fun hearing someone we actually know on the microphone. My friends pretty confused by it all like I was when we started so I’m glad we have been doing it for 3 years now so I’ve been able to answer a lot of her questions and walk her through troubleshooting etc. Today was my nieces 14th birthday so I took her present over to her in the morning before she left for school. I was talking to my sister about her new job. She is working at the school as a substitute aide. The part I found really odd is they did not have her do any classes or training what so ever! She’s dealing with unruly kids in study hall with only her own parenting (she has 4 kids) for experience. I don’t think I feel that safe with just anyone doing these jobs in the school. My boyfriends son missed the bus today so I had to drive out to their house and pick him up and take him to school. The photo was my daughters snack, cotton candy grapes. She ate half the package and the rest were left for my son (which is what you see in the photo). They were so delicious but are something we bought to try just this once as they were over $8. Have any of you tried these yummy grapes?

Cotton candy grapes is very good. I hope your son enjoys is lessons, despite all the tech problems to get online. Happy birthday to your niece. How is the dog of your boyfriend? I hope better.

@LadyDuck My boyfriend was sick so we didn't see him this past weekend. He is coming tomorrow night and I hope his dog doesn't stink still! Cyber school is starting out so different this year and it's really confusing. At least I am familiar with most things to be able to help my friend and her daughter out. The things annoying me are annoying my friend too. Hopefully things smooth out with tech issues as the days pass. Right now my son has caught my nephew's cold. Thankfully with teachers out doing testing he only had two live classes so we have been able to do the rest of the work on our own in between him laying down to rest.

@LadyDuck the temperatures here dropped a lot so our bedroom was so cold. I took the air conditioner out and now it has gotten hot again lol. It was a gorgeous day but I had anxiety and a lot of cleaning to do so I didn't get out to enjoy it much. I put their conditioners back in our bedroom earlier today so it will be cool enough to sleep up there comfortably.

@shaggin I am sorry that your son has caught a cold. I had to go to Italy last Tuesday, in the subway it was so hot that I also got a horrible cold.

I haven't tried cotton candy grapes. Your sister's job sounds stressful. I think people doing this work should have some training at least.

@JudyEv it seems crazy to me they didnt at least have her take some lessons or something to do this job. Just going in and being handed a paper on what room to be in at a certain time isn't enough. Granted she probably only makes minimum wage and teachers are paid a lot more but teachers go through classes to learn what to do for kids behavior and all that. I feel safer with teachers around my kids knowing they have had training but I don't like the idea of these untrained aides in the classroom with students.

@shaggin It's not fair to the adult or the students - not in my book anyway. I'm sure she could do a much better job with a bit of training.

The cotton candy grapes are real grapes. They are large and round. I thought maybe they injected them with cotton candy flavoring but when I looked up information about them I found I was very wrong. They are a hybrid fruit.

@bunnybon7 it is because of their taste they taste like cotton candy and grapes at the same time. They are so yummy!

@DianneN they were pricey but worth trying for sure. Well for my kids anyway. Personally I just ate one as I wanted them to have them. I hope you get to try them before they go out of season. They are so yummy!

It's great there's someone in his class you both know, and that you can help their mom out too with the schooling. As I can only imagine how complicated it can be at first to learn. That is strange. As to be any type of teacher here, you have to go to school and stuff for it.

These are aides and I guess when they don't have enough substitute teachers they have the sit with the students in study hall. I'm not comfortable at all with this! They should have some form of training even if only a few classes on behavior etc. I shouldn't be surprised this school allows this stuff seeing as the one guy who worked in the high school doing drivers Ed impregnated many students over the years. Instead of firing him they sent him to work as a gym teacher in the elementary school. He just retired this past year. In politics even an allegation can cause someone problems but here everything is just hushed up.

Wow I've never heard of those grapes - a certain variety? Pity they are expensive. I hope that the cyber school day goes well

@FayeHazel I assumed they injected something into them to make them taste like cotton candy but according to what I just looked up they bred two regular breeds and made a hyrbid which is the cotton candy grapes. They have twice as much sugar as other grapes too. It sounds like a lot of work to grow them so that explains the high cost.

@FayeHazel oh that is neat! I bought her a big Apple a few weeks ago it was $2.50. She took it to school and then only ate half of it for her lunch. She should have ate that first since it was such a costly apple that I won't be buying again.

@shaggin Ah makes sense. That's cool though. I have a friend who is real into the apple varieties. They have a lot of new ones - my favorite is a Sweet 16 which tastes like grape candy - go figure

@GardenGerty in the summer is the lowest priced for fruit. At $8 for a bag during the summer I can only wonder how expensive they would be the rest of the year.

@cherriefic that would be wonderful. It would mean more jobs for teachers and different way for children to learn while not having to go to a public school building.

I did a substitute teaching many years ago, and they hired me with no teacher education. I didn't do it long as the kids were unruly. No, I have never had cotton candy grapes.

@LeaPea2417 I don't think that is good for the teacher or students for the teacher to not have any training. Even a short class on behavior and how to handle it would be better.

I have never seen cotton candy grapes but think I would like them. Our schools are closed here due to the approach of Florence. I suppose if I were a cyberschool teacher I could work today as long as power and internet stay on. Hm, I don't know if that's a good thing or not.

@DWDavis lol well you would likely not be paid as much to be a cyber school teacher but all that scary behavior you have to deal with in your school you wouldn't have to deal with in cyber school. I only ate one but the cotton candy grapes were so very yummy!

@sol_cee I'm really not sure how they are made but they are grapes that have a strong taste of cotton candy. They taste just as good as they sound!

@rakski this is a new grape sold around here but very costly. They are hard to produce so hence the higher cost. Cyberschooling is good. My son has a day off today for Yom Kippur.
