No One Noticed

I had been wanting to make burritos for a while, so last night was the day, or evening.
I was sure I had everything but I didn`t and I was not going into town for anything so I substituted one ingredient for another and no one noticed, instead I got raves about how good dinner was.
I buy and cook dry beans, then I home can them so I always have a quick but healthy addiction to my daily meals, when in need of beans. I thought I still had a pint jar of pinto beans but I was out.
Oh no!
What did I see?
Red beans.
I drained those red beans and smashed them, mixed in my spices and into the microwave for a minute.
I made up the burritos and no one noticed the difference.
Have you ever did this?

My favorite was when I made chicken and noodles with rabbit. I knew the kids would not eat it if the knew before.

@andriaperry I did that one too lol. But the kids had raised the rabbits so had it in their heads they would not like them. After they ate seconds I told them the truth. I still laugh thinking about the looks on the girls faces. My boys werent as bad, but hubbies girls.

I made a deer meatloaf once and no one knew it was deer.
Those silly people, Rabbit taste just like chicken and deer taste just like beef.

Drain the pintos, smash them. Add them to a hot skillet with a tiny amount of oil, with garlic, a dash of cumin and red pepper, fry`em a minute and that is it.

I think you did good to come up with that. I guess it's like my mother always said, no matter how bad you think you need something, you can find a way to do without it.

@andriaperry Yea, that is a saying that I always heard growing up. No matter how old I get I still remember it. I also have told my own children the same thing.

@andriaperry I know beans are in all the old cowboy books. They seem a very American thing.

I use whatever beans I have cooked up. Red beans and pinto beans look very similar when smashed up.Not worth a trip to the store. Great substitution.

I would think that the red beans would be a good substitution for the pintos without changing the taste.
Depending on what I'm making I try to find something that is similar when making a substitution or if possible I'll leave out that ingredient if it won't really change the recipe.

I never tried them till last night, I could tell the difference, they are not as strong in flavor as pintos.

I use whatever beans I have on hand...white kidney beans, red kidney beans....navy beans, pinto beans....the results are similar. Black beans aren't as visually appealing when they are mashed.

I think black bears taste just like pintos but here, I am the only one that will eat the black bean.

You are a true chef in my book. Love this post! You seem to be able to take any food and turn it into something greater. Burritos I have never been a fan of, but I would try yours though lol. Microwaves are a must to me lol. I always tell waiters to keep the beans out of my orders lol.
