My hubby and I want to adopt a pet for my mother. We have to been to the MSPCA to adopt a kitten unfortunately they say there was no kitten maybe next week there will be.
They informed us that they have puppies if we are interested. We are so confused now since there is no kittens should we adopt a puppy or just wait for the kitties?
We do love both cats and dogs but we can only adopt one pet.

You can choose to adopt an adult cat which would spare your mom having to fuss with a kitten. On the side of the puppy is that she would have to walk it every day and it would get her out of the house which is good too.

@BabeSays it all depends on what she would prefer. A dog will keep her more active and a cat might be more affectionate but also needs to have its litter cleaned etc.

I suggest dog. Our dog named Blackie is also good in catching rats in our house. He has caught more than 10 already.

@december873 Likewise I thought only cats catches rat. Snoopy was awesome. She was brown, white and has black spots.

Maybe you can just have cats around the house, in the neighbourhood, give them some food, not too much, so they will eat the rats and the mice and maybe hunt the snakes around.
You can have a dog too, but, it comes with a lot of responsibility like taking the dog out 3 times a day, keeping it active, giving it food, not just leftovers...medications, vaccines.
The dog will need a lot of company, or else, it will get sad. Dogs don't like being alone. Street cats are cool with being alone, they can sleep somewhere.

@BabeSays Ummm...Street cats are less around the house, they have their life, so consider that they will not always be around, and some of them will die from a car, a dog, but that's the balance in the street.

Does your mother live with you @BabeSays ? Why must it be a kitty or puppy? What's wrong with a full-grown dog or cat? Plus you have to consider the Calico you already have (jealousy, anxiety, stress, etc)

@BabeSays Taking on a pet is serious business. Does your Mom even want one? Is she physically okay to do it? Remember the cost: food, vet bills, etc.

@nanette64 Vet is free here and food isn't a problem. And Yes she wanted one since long time.

What do you do when you need to go out for a long time ?
Can the cats live outside and get along with the rest of the cats ?
