Fur Coats Can No Longer be Sold in Los Angeles

When I was a young woman in my 30s living in Dallas, Texas, my husband bought me a beautiful, luxurious mink coat with a fox collar. I wore it often in Dallas ... to theater performances, special events, and church. Occasionally, in especially cold weather, I would even wear the coat to the grocery store or to run similar errands. Fur coats were well accepted in Dallas in the 1980s and 1990s and it was common to see women of all ages wearing them. When we moved to California in 2000, however, I discovered that I rarely had a reason to put it on. Not only is the weather normally too mild to justify wearing a heavy coat, but furs are not socially acceptable here. I believe I have worn it twice in the last 18 years ... both times on winter trips to Las Vegas. I have not taken it on trips where we had to fly in the winter, simply because it is too bulky to take on a plane. Now, the Los Angeles City Council has taken the extra step of making it illegal to sell fur coats in the city. Although I do not live in Los Angeles, but in Orange County which is south of LA, I will not be surprised to see this law spread to other, nearby cities. I fully support that decision. I actually do not want to wear my fur coat ever again, although I am not quite sure what to do with it. I hate the thought that cute little minks, like the one in the photo, were killed to make my coat. Do you wear fur? How do you feel about it?

I think the ban is a good thing really but the feel of a fur coat is something else.

@myklj999 I still have a lucky blue rabbit's foot I bought in the 1970s. Maybe I should put it in a safe

@RasmaSandra In tourist shops you can buy coin purses made from a kangaroo's scrotum which I find pretty gross but no doubt they sell.

I would wear it here. But then I hate those little mink type animals. They like to try to get at my chickens and ducks. So that would make it more pleasurable for me.

@DeborahDiane Depending on the age of your coat it might have been from hunting, but most now are from farmed animals.

@wolfgirl569 - Ahh, I can understand why a pest animal needs to be culled and kept to a reasonable number. If only we knew if our fur coats were made from wild minks which were killed to protect chickens and ducks ... and not from farmed minks.

I never liked furs, this because I always loved animals. No woman here in Switzerland (and now even in Italy) wants to wear a fur in our days. It was different in the past. My mother had 4 furs, two were beautiful furs, I donated them, nobody wants to buy.

@DeborahDiane People look at you like you were a "criminal" if you wear a fur. I also donated my red fox fur because I felt extremely embarrassed wearing it.

@LadyDuck - Yes, I would be too embarrassed to wear my coat anymore, especially in Los Angeles. Times have changed.

@LadyDuck - Styles and tastes change over the years. Now young women would not dream of wearing a fur. You are right. Nobody wants to buy them.

The ban is a good thing in my eyes. I have over 15 fur coats (it's cold here) and 9 of them are mink. Actually, my husband bought me a beautiful mink at Neiman Marcus 6 years ago. None of my daughters-in-law would wear them, and I don't blame them. One sister-in-law is willing to take one. I will wear some of the others walking Doodles in my yard and donate the others to charity.

@DianneN - Yes, I used to have more, too. My husband even had a mink, tuxedo cut jacket that he would wear when we went to formal events in the winter in Dallas. Years ago he gave it to our daughter who worked at Neimans to have it re-styled, but I don't think she ever did. She has never worn it, as far as I know. Young women just do not want them. I will save mine for that occasional trip to Sin City, Las Vegas. I know I can wear it there in the winter! LOL

@DianneN - I will never buy another one, either. I wonder what will happen to all the fur coats owned by our generation when we pass away? Do you think our grandchildren will want them?

@DeborahDiane My boys and my husband were always against furs. My mother and I had a field day at a furrier's one day while my husband was away on a convention. We each had two fur coats custom made for us. It was so much fun, and when my husband saw them on me, he caved. Anything to keep me happy. Happy wife, happy life. I will keep a couple in Florida for trips back to the Northeast. I certainly don't want to freeze and they are warm. However, I will never buy another fur.

@Plethos - Good response. Apparently, very few people in California wear it, because I have heard no protests to the ban.

@Plethos - Well, I am sure many people feel that California is too intrusive, although our population continues to grow and now 11% of all US citizens live in California. I would be happy if all the people who think it is too intrusive would move to other, less intrusive states. I don't mind the rules, even when I have to adjust to them. I just wish the US population would spread out a bit! LOL

@DeborahDiane - because of the "fur is murder" crowd no one really wears fur anymore. california is too pc and intrusive on peoples individual rights.

I work fr a company that sells fur products so I do experience the views of people against fur.My view is that we shouldn’t kill animals just for fur. However if we need to kill an animal any way for food or for population control for ecological reasons we should use every part of the animal so It isn’t a waste including the fur.

@sh2ker - Yes, I agree with that philosophy. That is why I am comfortable wearing leather. I believe the entire cow should be used, if people are going to eat steak.

@sh2ker - Yes, and using all the parts of an animal is very important. We shouldn't waste the animal, once it is killed.

@DeborahDiane It reminds me of the Native Americans using every part of the Buffalo.

I have never been in favor of wearing coats made from animal fur. But I have worn and enjoyed faux fur coats that come in different colors. I am glad that animals will be spared.

@DeborahDiane that is what I would like if I ever needed one, however, I just checked the prices and many of these coats cost almost the same as real fur.

Anne had a very nice one from years past and life in St. Louis when we met. She never wore it in Oregon ( of all places). She gave it to a friend back in St. Louis, a less evolved place than the west coast.

Once surely it was the fashion but as we are more aware of wild life protection I support this decision of banning fur coats.

@thislittlepennyearns - I think it might be hard to sell. Very few people wear furs these days, at least not in California.
