Suspicious Package Puts Community on Alert

On Sept. 21, 2018, I was first alerted to the incident by a Facebook post put out by local authorities. At which time I began to monitor the situation. It wasn't until an ambulance was called in, on standby, that I headed out, looking to get information on traffic being diverted from the area. Police were asking the public to stay away from the area and that information needed to get out quickly.
I initially posted the alert out on social media Facebook and Twitter, through my page as well as the community page and neighborhood watch groups. I assessed the perimeter law enforcement set up, taking video footage, photos, and immediately uploaded them.
It was roughly later in the day just as school was getting out when the incident took place. The package had been left at a gas station in the area. Police called in the Bomb Squad where they moved the package to an old Kmart parking lot.
One gentleman stopped to ask what was happening, said he needed to get over to Vestal and that police diverted him away from the area. I informed him Main Street was still open, vehicles could go straight or turn left, but police were not letting anyone turn right. He thanked me for the information and headed out.
In the photo, I'm sharing today, you can see the Bomb Squad vehicle on the far left, the suspicious package just right to the center, and police vehicles on the opposite side. This was the area they set off the package.
Police say no explosive was found and the investigation is ongoing. Local Law Enforcement were there, FBI, State Police, and the Bomb Squad.

Just curious, if police asked the public to stay away, why did you feel the need to go to see and photograph what was occurring?

Because I'm a journalist. It's what I do report the news.

@Morleyhunt Police requested the public to be informed and asked to stay away. By knowing the perimeter set up it's easier to tell people routes they can still travel. Keep in mind kids were getting out of school, which delayed buses get through and a lot of folks like getting their alerts from social media being that's where they are most in this day and age not at the t.v. or with a radio on.

@WendySpickerman okay...that makes sense....it's just so many people today, don't follow directions....when told to stay away, they have this irresistible urge to go and interfere.

Every time the police asks people to stay away from an area, there are those who urgently feel the need to go there. We had to get out of our local highway last month, digging a field they have found a big WWII bomb. It happens several times a year.

A rather historical find. How many do you suppose they have found?

@WendySpickerman We live near the Italian border and it is most of the time in Italy that an old bomb is found. After the end of the world an estimated 25,000 bombs have already been found, but the experts say that there are a similar quantity not yet found.

I was covering it from the start and putting it out live. I'm just glad no one was injured.

Law enforcement won't give that detail out with it being an ongoing investigation. They'll look at video footage to see if they caught the person on tape leaving the package. They'll look at the contents within the package and move forward from there.

Community members remarked on those moving into the area. Some coming from very troubled places filled with more crime.
