Should parents smoke at the bus stop?

United States

With the school year started, many parents who live in town, can be seen huddled with their children waiting for the school bus. On occasion, you can see parents smoking. Shouldn't there be a law against parents smoking were school children are? Some might say, "Well it's their child." But it's not just their child if they are at a designated spot to pick up a number of different children at a school bus stop. Thoughts...

One of the problems is litigation when it comes to a sidewalk, being it is considered private property and not public.

@BabeSays A lot of school bus stops are placed by businesses. Maybe if community members step up, sign a petition and speak with each individual business, maybe they'll put a no smoking sign out there.

I fully expect to be in the minority It isn't a good thing to smoke inside around anyone that doesn't smoke. Outside, my personal opinion is that it isn't as bad as the smoke will blow away so the dangers from passive smoking are massively reduced.

@WendySpickerman I thought I'd be getting some abuseas smoking is a big issue for many these days. If there was a rule that said you couldn't smoke around non smokers, even outdoors, I'd have no problem with that as it'd save me some money!!!

I have been a smoker for years, going back to before there were any regulations regarding when, where you could smoke. However, today, I just roll with the times. I do not smoke around kids or other non-smokers UNLESS said non-smokers invade MY space, then it is shame on them, not me. Smoking at a school bus stop? Or any bus stop? Nope. Nada. Would never even occur to me to do so. In crowded areas, I will step away to smoke and I do not ever leave any trace i.e. butts behind. Sometimes I think smokers are their own worse enemies. We choose to smoke knowing the health risks and consequences, but no reason to affect other people including throwing our trash on the ground. It is also about showing common courtesy.

Well here we have a law, parents cannot smoke while waiting for a bus, they cannot even smoke waiting for the normal bus, because they "pollute" those who are not smokers.

Smokers are having more tough times now with all these regulations...they should form an union to get back their smoking rights
