Day 34
Luke 9:18-22
Luke 9:18 And it came to pass, as he was alone praying, his disciples were with him: and he asked them, saying, Whom say the people that I am?
19 They answering said, John the Baptist; but some say, Elias; and others say, that one of the old prophets is risen again.
20 He said unto them, But whom say ye that I am? Peter answering said, The Christ of God.
21 And he straightly charged them, and commanded them to tell no man that thing;
22 Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day.
Identity is important. When someone new comes on the scene, people will look up everything they can find about the person, the good and the bad. They want to know if he or she is qualified for what they do.
Jesus asked His disciples who people thought He was, and then He asked them who they thought He was. It’s the same question Herod had regarding Him. Herod didn’t have an answer, but Peter did.
As Christians, you settled in your hearts and minds who Jesus is when you accepted Him as Savior and Lord. You too had heard or read about Him, and you came to the place where you knew He was who He claimed to be, the Son of God.
With Peter’s declaration of who Jesus was, Jesus told them not to tell anyone because no one would believe them until after His death and resurrection. Jesus’ death and resurrection would give validity to His being the Son of God and their Messiah.
When a person knows something, they want to tell everyone what they know. It isn’t always the right time to relate what you know. However, when you trust Jesus for the timing, people will listen and believe what you tell them.
Jesus’ disciples had a new understanding of who Jesus was when Peter made his declaration. Then everything Jesus had done in their midst became clear. What wasn’t clear yet, was His telling them about His suffering and death.
As soon as everything became clear, Jesus told them to go and preach the good news of the kingdom of God to everyone, going to the far reaches of the known world.
Today, you have all the information you need to tell the world who Jesus is, corroborated by history and your testimony on how Jesus changed your life. You don’t need to wait any longer.
Let’s pray: Father, help me wait on Your timing. Direct me to those people whom the Holy Spirit leads me to and give me the words to say to bring about salvation in their lives. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.
