From Odesk to Upwork-Getting back on freelancing

I have just learned that Odesk is now called Upwork. It is a site just like freelancer where you can bid on jobs from data entry to writing to other computer jobs and earn once you have completed a project. I am trying to get familiarize myself with the site and hopefully would win a project and earn some extra income online.
Any tips for those of you who have tried Odesk, Upwork and Freelancer?
Do you know of any other ways to earn money online?

They're more strict now because they would put your account to indefinite suspension if you couldn't land a job after applying for so many. It won't be a problem perhpas if your skills are not limited or in demand because you can compete with the pool of candidates.

@ZedSmart Is that so? I did see that you can actually only bid for limited slots (which I think is what they call connects). Odesk was much simpler though. Have you tried any of them? How was the experience if so?

@ZedSmart What do you mean by upgrade? Like pay something on the site to land better projects?

@penrockerchic I used both before but not now because I'm not that competent. I rarely land a project that's why I thought to upgrade it first before going back to the platform.

I heard good feedback about it and I am also planning to explore it for freelance writing work.
