Workday Weirdness

Norwich, England

When I lived on the outskirts of my county's main city, Norwich, I used to walk into work each day. I'd plug in my walkman (we're talking 1980's here!) and stride out on my 40 minute hike to the office. On two occasions I had a strange encounter. The first was when I got to an old building that was being renovated. It had scaffolding along the front and the pathway was narrow and blocked from the road by plastic netting so only one person could walk along it. As I walked towards the city I could see a man in a dark suit and with a black beard walking towards me so I side stepped into an alleyway to let him pass through. I waited a while but nobody passed me so I popped my head out of the alleyway and there was nobody there. He couldn't have gone anywhere as there was nowhere for him to go - no doorways or any way to get through the plastic netting. A few days later I was taking that same journey and I could see through the massive windows of a shop on the corner of a junction that a man wearing a black suit and sporting a black beard was walking a black labrador dog. I side stepped into the shop doorway so that the man could safely come round the corner without bumping into me. Again, I waited but nobody came round the corner and, as I'd been looking at the shops on the opposite side of the road, I knew he hadn't crossed the road. I stepped out of the doorway and went to the junction from which he'd been walking and there was no sign of him. He obviously hadn't turned and walked back from where he'd come and neither had he walked towards the city (the direction I was walking). No idea what had happened but could it have been some kind of ghostly figure? I'd never really believed in spirits until then but I can't explain it. I spoke to several people and nobody else had seen him or heard about him. I'm not a fanciful person but my partner suggested that maybe, because I was zoned out in my peaceful 'morning selection' of classical music on my walkman, it just made me more sensitive to the spirit world. Anyone else had any weird experiences or any ideas what had happened?

Norwich is said to be 'one of the most haunted cities in England' (though I've seen quite a number of similar claims by other places). There seems to be no explanation for your two experiences, though mention of the black labrador puts me in mind of Black Shuck, though he is usually a quite different beast!

@olliesmum I'd be interested to know what you felt at the time that you saw both of these apparitions. Did you feel that there was anything strange before the man disappeared and did you think that, when you saw the man with the dog, that it was the same man? Of course, we do have plenty of supposed ghosts in Cambridge, especially as many of the colleges were monasteries and nunneries before they became colleges, but the ones which stand out for me are the ghost of an otter (or something similar) which has been reported to haunt the garden of an old house in Abbey Road and reports of a large black dog ('Black Shuck', though I don't think that name was used) which was seen on at least a couple of occasions, I believe, near the Folk Museum on Castle Hill.

@owlwings I was listening to a cassette tape of classical music at the time. From what I can remember I was listening to Debussy or Vaughan Williams so something very soothing and gentle. I did think it was the same gentleman but only a week or so after the second sighting. I'm quite a practical person and really couldn't believe it could have been a spirit but I wouldn't rule it out.

Strange you should mention Black Shuck. I lived in the broadland village of Coltishall until I was 26 (although I now live in a village just a couple of miles away from it) and it was said Black Shuck used to walk along the riverside footpath between Coltishall and a very small hamlet called Hautbois. Thankfully I never saw him as, if folklore has it right, I probably wouldn't still be alive to tell the tale. Of course, we also have the headless body of Anne Boleyn wandering around this area too!! I'm sure though that the most beautiful and historic city of Cambridge must have its fair share of ghosties and ghoulies.

I havent had that kind of experience yet (I've never seen a ghost yet) but I think it would be better if you will not step aside next time so that you will be certain that what you've been seeing is a ghost.

Unfortunately my good manners outweigh my ghostly experiences

That is strange. Next time you'll just have to keep walking and see if he does too!

That's really interesting. It certainly seems very strange. And welcome to myLot too.
