Best way to publish...?

I am writing books because it is my dream. I have been trying self-publishing. But I am not really sure how I can put myself out there. Sometimes they say it is better to have a company that publisher, despite the increased risk of loosing your work. I am sure there are pros and cons here. What should a writer go for? Self-publishing or company publishing? Why?
