MyLot Exclusive #38 Can you picture yourself living in a giant skyscraper with 800,000 other people? In a place where refusing sexual advances is a capital crime? And if you're found guilty of that or any other crime...Without a trial or even being arrested by proper law enforcement officials...You can simply be executed? If you've never done it, don't sweat it, because Robert Silverberg did it for you when he published The World Inside, in 1971. And the reason I'm talking about it today isn't that I'm reviewing it again. It's because I recently saw yet another futuristic prediction about huge buildings housing insane numbers of people. I don't know how far this will ultimately go but given that they say we can now build one kilometer (That's for 0.62 miles for everyone who's updated their measuring system) high buildings should we ever feel like it, it seems like this is another case where Science Fiction is merging with Science Fact. That fascinates me and I wonder what other people think of it. Should things go the way Mr. Silverberg saw it happening, will we doom ourselves to his mostly unhappy world? Or can we manage to do it right? How much faith do you have left in the human race? Especially right now, given the fact that the United States just put a rapist on the Supreme Court? Is that the future or an unfortunate mistake made by stupid people that we can easily correct? Along with all the other stupid mistakes? Here's some more information on the book, if you're interested. And if you actually want to read it, which I recommend because it's pretty good, I imagine you can find it for free on one of the e-reader sites:

We are already doing it here in Fort Lauderdale--1 block at a time!!
One of the largest downtown developments of the recent building boom won approval Tuesday night, clearing the city of Fort Lauderdale without a City Commission vote.

That's what I like best about Ft. Lauderdale, it's so ahead of the times.

That does sound intriguing. Somedays I wonder if those Sci-Fi authors had it right all along anyway.

A lot of Sci-Fi writers have predicted a lot of things. Jules Vern probably has the most accurate predictions.

@FayeHazel That's understandable. Even Babe Ruth struck out once in a while.

@xander6464 I love the film adaptations of his Vern's writings, though I tried 'Journey to the Center of the Earth" once, just couldn't get into it...

I like the freedom of not feeling like part of an ant colony better

Thank you I will take a look at this. I can say that all my life I lived in apartments. My parents lived in apartments buildings no taller than five floors and the last one had six. Anyway, as I grew I always longed for us to live in a house and be able to go out in a garden. Then I moved to Latvia and that was the reason for having a house in the suburbs I felt smothered by the apartment buildings. I am a native NYC girl. Now living in Florida in a small apartment in a two-story house I feel I could breathe I open my door and I see palm trees and I smile.

Interesting society he created. Soon there won't be science fiction, it will have merged seamlessly with science fact.

@just4him That's a good plan! The Enterprise now has Holodecks. It is a much better place.
