Maths, A Formidable Subject?

This year, about 75% of candidates who wrote the recently ended West African Secondary School Certificate Examination in my country, failed. Though performances for the other subjects have improved exponentially over the years, maths has always been a headache for most students. Why is Maths so tough for most students.? Does this challenge happen in your country? Good evening dear Mylotters.

Math is my favorite subject, Algebra being my forte. Sadly, no matter how much I like it, a lot of my classmates find it very difficult and excruciating at times. In our country, Math is the least liked subject because people think it’s very complicated. I guess that is true to some point. But I guess everything can be learned when people are interested, no matter how difficult. Those who say they don’t like the subject, I think they’re just saying That they’re not really that into it. I believe though that if they put they’re minds to it, they’ll see how interesting and fun the subject is. It also depends on how much of a critical thinker a person is. I have onserved that my classmates who are critical thinkers are better at math than those who are inclined into memorizing facts, even though both excel at school. Math needs dedication. I saw people change from not being very fond of the subject and improve exponentially when they really tried to learn its ropes. These are just my thoughts and observations. :)

@miss_taken. That's a powerful observation. Interest in the subject is the first step in cutting the subject's head. There are similar cases here where poor maths students excelled with interest and dedication

@GovindaB I think it requires just that. Everything can be learned and achieved if you just put your mind into it. That’s what I believe at least. :)

Math can be difficult for some depending on how it is taught, how well the teacher relates what is being learned to the students' lives, and how willing the students are to pay attention and do the necessary practice. Math takes a lot of practice.
