Deciding what you want to do for a living

My boyfriend currently works as an accountant, but he's not really happy with his job. The problem is that he doesn't know what do do for a living. He would actually prefer to work part time, which wouldn't be a problem, except that a lot of companies prefer their employees to work full time. I feel bad for him, because he's really unhappy at his job and he just doesn't know what he would actually enjoy doing. How did you decide what you wanted to do for a living? Do you enjoy your job? Do you work part time or full time?

Your boyfriend is lucky because he got the good position in the company, maybe he has other plans that's why he wanted to be part time only.

He actually doesn't have a great position because the work he does is rather menial and he's quite clever.

Oh I get it. That's the reason I didn't enrol accounting and other office related jobs.

I would love to do any job from home, be it part time or full time.. He should consult someone who can make him reach to his destination..

I'm lucky, as a teacher I do get to work from home a lot, preparing my lessons, grading tests and so on. Maybe there is some type of consultant that could help him. Thanks for the tip!

I quite like my job but it isn't anything I really thought I wanted to do. In fact, it was only a few years ago (in my mid-30s) that I decided what I really wanted to do. If your boyfriend is young, he has plenty of opportunity to make changes. Perhaps thinking about what it is he enjoys doing- eg. is there a hobby he enjoys or something he'd like to learn? It can be hard to make changes because you could leave one thing for something else and end up hating what you thought you'd love.

Thank you for this nice comment with actual tips! He's young, so he has time to decide. I'm glad you enjoy doing your job, even though it isn't what you originally had in mind for yourself.

Knowing what you want to do is important, because we spend most of our life working. I would say that he needs to make more clear in his mind what he really wants to do, before deciding to quit his job.

He definitely won't quit his job before he has anything else, but the problem is that he doesn't really know what he wants to do instead.

@LadyDuck I hope he figures it out soon. He has time, though, he's still young.

I think your boyfriend should be careful if he is thinking of leaving his job. I would advise that he have something else lined up before burning his bridges as they say. But perhaps jobs are easy to come by where you are.

Like I said in another comment, he's not planning on leaving his current job before he gets another one. He just doesn't know what to do.

I think we all are not satisfied with what we have. We want more. Without job it's not possible to earn. If he is not satisfied with his full time job then he should mentioned it in his resume.

He's not saying he doesn't want to work at all. He didn't know he wanted to work part time when he started his job hunt. I feel like a lot of people judge men for wanting to work part time. If it were me who wanted to do this, I don't think so many people would judge.

@maclanis his girlfriend said at the beginning that he actually prefer to work part time. The most important thing is that we don't know which of the things make us happy as we are not satisfied with what we have.
