Panama City Beach

Canada
October 11, 2018 9:54am CST
The hurricane yesterday hitting the beach in Panama City Beach, Florida, gave us the creeps. So glad we were not there. We enjoyed a vacation there in 2016, but because it was February the water was too cold so we spent our time sunning on the beach and swimming in the heated pools at our high-rise. We also visited dozens of delightful restaurants. Our hearts go out to those who live there, or were visiting there, it must have been crazy today.

It happened to me last year with St. Maarten. I went twice there, once with a friend and the last time with my daughter Claudia and her children. All was lost, all was destroyed. I cannot imagine what has happened to the people that lived there, many of whom depended on tourists.

@marguicha This is what I feared as soon as I saw the extension of the damages. When I think that my husband wanted to buy a house there and move there permanently.

Hurricane Michael slammed ashore as a Category 4, the strongest ever to hit the Florida Panhandle

We also went to Panama City Beach in February and enjoyed walking on the beach every morning. I am so sorry thinking that they were badly touched by the hurricane.

It was a lovely vacation for us, the views were wonderful and walking the beach is something we do when vacationing on a beach. That year was before my new knee and I didn't walk much. The hubs did every morning. So sad to see the photos of the mess the hurricane left behind.

I still can't find photos of the Panama City Beach. I'm thinking the next town got the worst of the hurricane, they seem to have lost everything. I just found this photos of before and after...

It's strange to think such a tranquil scene can turn into something chaotic when a hurricane comes through.

Watching it on the TV was very scary. If it scared me on the TV, just think what must have been going on to those who live there... If you want to see some photos, I posted a link on another comment above.

@PainsOnSlate I went to the link. How awful. You wouldn't know where to start if your house was so damaged. And the poor shop-keepers.

@Hannihar The photos on line and in the news of that whole area was horrible. It will take years to get those buildings up again and they will have to be stronger than the old ones.

I have only been in Florida for fun and vacations, my parents bought some land in the middle of the state and I inherited it. While on vacation we drove by it and it was in the middle of nowhere. I can't imagine ever living there, I love the state but I don't want to live there. So sorry for all who went through hell during the hurricane. Glad your family is ok, can't imagine how it feels to lose a home and a car in a storm and I hope I never find out either.

@PainsOnSlate I kinda like living in the middle of nowhere, it all really depends on how far it's from nowhere lol.

It made the whole panhandle of Florida look like a disaster. The storm was awful. Thankfully I live in the north and it didn't get up here.
Hurricane Michael was the strongest storm to make landfall in the continental United States since Hurricane Andrew in 1992. The scope of the devastation remains unclear at this point.

Thanks, I has not been on here often for a long time - too busy painting and making money. We loved the Panama City Beach for a vacation, but I haven't seen any beach condos photos on line yet. I think the high-rises were made to stand through a hurricane but I don't know that yet for real. I looked on line and didn't see any high-rises... All is good here in Canada except winter is on the way...
