Do you ever tell anyone "Have a nice day" when you are in public?

I use to work at a grocery store and now I catch myself saying it all the time. Most people seem to appreciate it.

I always say it. I think it lets them know that they're human and even though they are "waiting" on me they're not beneath me, just another human being. I can't stand rudeness so I always try to make sure I don't come across as rude.

I'm with you! I like to notice and treat as human, all those I deal with and come across.. I don't go for this not seeing people. Although I do ignore people too, as I find this is what many want also, as they are going about their business.. But I like it when people break through.. the other week an elderly lady said "nice plant" when she saw the plant I had in my grocery cart.. then she looked a little regretful, kinda like "wow she'll think I'm a looney" so I had to give her a big grin and say "it's the only plant I don't kill". Her and her husband grinned back. Then we went back to ignoring each other.. I find I like people more and more.. Even though I prefer to be a bit of a loner when it comes to friendships.. I don't like to hang out with people.. or spend lots of time with them, but I love interacting with people..

I know this question is a little bit old, but I found it through your profile after I answered a couple of your other questions and I want to answer this one. I also used to work in retial, as a retail manager for a small store. I always told people to have a nice day and I still do now even though I don't work in retail anymore. One night we were coming home from visiing with my grandparents family. We had to stop at a gas station and to get my daughter some milk. After paying I told the cashier thanks and to have a nice night. She kind of gave me this weird look and first and then was like "Wow, thank you. I have been working just about all day and you were the first person to say that to me." It is amazing, but a simple thank you or even have a nice day can go a long way or really make someone elses day. That is why I continue to say it. In fact, sometimes, I feel bad if I forget to say anything nice like that.

I really do hink it makes peoples day. Especially if you have already put in a bad one. You know as well as I do, working with the public can be very trying and someone just to be nice to you will brighten your day. By the way, thanks for responding.

I say that or have a good day. I also try to use the persons name if they have a name tag and ask how their day is going. It's just common courtesy. When I worked in the public I always liked when people acknowledged me rather than just overlooking me.

its sure will be a great thing to hear :) try greeting your friends with it, not only you'll be making them feel great that you care, you too will fill happy about it once you've said it.. My favorite phrase goes like this: "they who clear the cloads for others will get more sunshine for themselves, and they who give light to others make themselves the brightest star."

If everyone said this, or at least parted with a good word for others, this world would be a wonderful place, just a few words is all that it takes to make someone's day, meaningful words like you said have a nice day, or enjoy your day, for example, it makes all the difference and certainly I would appreciate it if someone said it to me.

yes, I say have a nice day when we are in public. Esp around this time of year, if I don't see acquaintances of friends for a long time, I say I hope you have a good holiday season. When I worked at a hospital instead of through an agency, if people worked late, and had a long drive, or even short drive, I would say "drive home safely." Unfortunately, the place I worked in, I found most people didn't appreciate this, or it was my perception that they didn't appreciate it....so I quit saying it for a long time.

I have never worked in retail except when I was in high school for a brief period but I always say to people "be safe", just something I have learned to say over the years.

That's good for you and others, I think. I do so in similar ways, such as "God bless!" I always tell anyone here to close my responses or posts. I make it as a habit. I always keep in my mind that telling so to anyone I meet is doing something like blessing. That's a "good telling". In Latin language it means "benedicere" (bene = good, dicere = to tell). Subconsciously it applies a possitive thinking in our relationship. I think it's powerful, both to us ourselves and to others. That way we make this world beautiful, don't we? Cheers! God bless you! ^_^

I too used to work in a grocery store as a cashier, and I still cath myself talking as if I am the employee LOL Before I moved to cahier at my work I was a deli clerk and I used to ask the customers "Is that everything?" and when I went to cashiering it was hard to break that habit. You ask someone that at check out and they seem to look a bit confused LOL

No.. but always say "you too" when it gets said to me. I annoy myself now though by saying to loved ones "same here" sometimes when they say I love you.. over the phone or at the end of a visit.. I developed the habit when I had a somewhat psycho friend who would keep me on the phone lots and then sign off with I love you.. which I wasn't real crazy about. [She had a very very traumatic childhood and I was being a good listener. And yes, I feel a little 'guilty' calling her psycho.] I didn't want or wasn't able to say I love you usually so I would say a less committal "same here" but these days it sounds very 'tin-ny' and I want to grab it back when it pops out of my mouth to my mom or a brother or my sister! I think I'm getting over this though.. which is good. My daughters voicemail signs off with a sorta singy "have a beautiful day.." - I like it! :)

On most occasions, I'll say it to others except in bad mood or just forgotten. :) I think although it's just simple words, it expresses your friendliness and respect to them. On hearing this, everyone will be glad and appreciate it, I think. Have a nice day!
