Has your child ever done this?

My son (who is almost 5 years old) has been constantly making a sound like he is clearing his throat.
He did this quite a bit when he was sick a few weeks earlier, but he has kept up that habit once he got over his sickness. When we asked why he does it, he says it is to annoy us.
I just wondered if this was normal 5 year old behavior or if we should be concerned!

I work with special needs kids, and we have a student that started this after being ill last year. It seems to have mostly vanished over the summer, but we were also told it was related to allergies. If it is a behavior that he is doing on purpose, though, do not respond to it, just ignore it.

Thank you for sharing....I was wondering if he was the only one! I don't think he has allergies....I really think it's just a behavior he's doing on purpose. I will try to just ignore it and not get upset with him over it.

Probably a passing phase he'll outgrow. He might have notice how this got your attention when he was sick. I would just ignore it. Children are keen observers of adults and often test the reaction of parents to how far they can get away with their behavior.

This is what we think too, but it is not a fun phase to go through, lol....a hard one to ignore! Our son does like to test things and see how far he can get with different things. Thank you for the input!

He is a smart kid, he is always telling us when things annoy him....so now he likes to "annoy" us with doing different things like that.
And we are trying to ignore it....but it's not always easy! thanks for the feedback

Yours does it for fun? My son does it to annoy us supposedly. He's been sniffling now too, so I wonder if it's not just to annoy us.

I am not sure about that. I am sorry I hope you may find an answer to this.
I seem to recall tho my son when he was little doing something or other repeatedly ..blinking maybe?
It was anxiety the doc said I believe if I remember right..but it passed.

@MommyOfEli2013 Oh did he? It could be just a bit of anxious then. I hope that is all it is. Let us know what happens please I would be interested to know. I really hope it passes tho.
Most welcome.

I hadn't thought of it being anxiety, but he mostly does this at home/around family. My son did the blinking repeatedly thing as well!
Thank you for sharing!

Thank you! And I hope so too...if he's still doing it in a month we'll ask his doctor since he has a check up then.

I'd prefer that over screaming. No kid is "special" enough to allow screaming that disturbs others,

Screaming would be worse yes....but the throat clearing does get annoying when he's doing it every 5 seconds. We're trying to just let him get past this stage he's going through.

That is possible....but he's been over his illness for a few weeks now.

Really he said it is to annoy us? That is too funny. If he was mine I would ignore his throat and he will stop, if not ask your doctor for some help. It sounds like you have a very smart child. And that is a good thing. Good luck. My children are all adults now but I loved being mom when they were little.

Yeah he did say that he does it to annoy us! We try to ignore it,but it's hard when it's a constant thing. I have been looking into it, and it could be a "tic" that should go away in a few months. Yes, he is very smart which is great....except for when he is smart enough to come up with new ways to push our buttons lol. That's great that you loved being mom when they were little, I enjoy it too of course! Thank you for your input!
