Children love gifts. When the tiny tots count the days for their birthdays, or ask for allowances for doing something Good, they expect a gift. Gifts are tokens of love and appreciation, and also make the childhood memorable. Even adults keep some of the gifts they received in their childhood. They are souvenirs of a period of innocence and happiness.

Children feel happy when they are doing something for someone else. And yes they do expect a gift.
I still have a necklace and bracelet set that my uncle bought me when I was about 5 or 6. I still have it even though it came apart. I also have a bracelet from when we went to a reservation.
