Please vote YES on 2! "Money is speech! And corporations are people, my friends!" Arum...what? This was uttered some years and presidents ago by wanna-be White House occupant Willard Mitt Romney. And this is being bandied about again this midterm cycle. Or at least, it's being debated on public radio. The First Amendment applies equally to all Americans to give us EQUAL voice. We surely do not all have the same money. And that being the case, money equaling speech is not the American way! ...unless y'all wanna start handing out money so that we all share the wealth... ...and the freedom! ;)

What does "money is speech" actually mean? That the more money you have the more air-time you can buy for political campaigning? If that is so, then the British model of severely limiting the amounts of money that can be spent on political campaigns has a lot to be said for it!

That and the access you have to shape the message and even the conversation in general. Buying airtime, yes, but also "buying" powerful friends and their access to things and time and attention and power and all of it. When it comes to democracy, an impoverished Abraham Lincoln should be able to bring his message to we the people be it 1860 or 2018. I think it would be an unequal playing field today...but, perhaps, for social media! ;)
