Do you use alarm clocks to wake up?

Back in college when I lived in a dorm, I never used an alarm clock. Mostly it's because I'm afraid I won't hear my alarm and just end up disturbing all my roommates (my dorm room had a capacity of 18 people max - 9 bunk beds, always at least half full).
So what I did instead was make sure I sleep by a certain hour in the evening so that I wake up by a certain hour in the morning. That worked pretty well.
It seems that the body knows when it's had enough sleep. In my case, throughout the years, it seems 6 hours is the norm. Back in the dorm, I made sure to sleep by midnight, and I woke up automatically by 6 am. Another example, last night I fell asleep sometime before 10 pm, and this morning I woke up without an alarm at around 4 am.
Of course, in the interim, I used alarm clocks a lot. It's usually needed when my schedule is out of whack (for example, had to sleep late finishing stuff but have to wake up early to do more stuff).
How about you?

So, you have a good body clock. I use the alarm on my phone and my Fitbit watch to wake me up though oftentimes, I wake up before the alarms goes on. I set it at 4AM for my morning walks on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday but mostly, i wake up at 3:30 or even earlier. I set the alarm at 5AM onSundays and Wednesday to attend mass.

@sunrisefan I see. So it seems your normal sleep is somewhere between 6-8 hours. Nice. :)

@moirai I usually sleep at about 9PM unless there's a PBA game of my favorite team.

Lately, I have had problems sleeping and I think I need to have a more regulated sleep so I have ordered a small alarm clock just to know when it is a certain time in the morning. I think if I regulate my sleep hours I might sleep better.

Some attribute this regular behavior to the biological clock, and I think it actually works, some recommend that before going to bed we should say aloud to ourselves at what time we want to get up and it works as a kind of autosuggestion. In most cases it works, something similar to your case happens to me, and my biological clock is in automatic.

@wifredorv31 Interesting.
I'm not overly religious, and I realize that not everyone believes, but aside from ensuring I slept no later than midnight back in the dorm, I used to ask (in prayer) for guardian angels to wake me up early so I don't get late for classes. I wonder if that could fall under this autosuggestion thing.

My alarms are still set, actually. (I didn't remove the settings.) But if I get enough sleep, I sometimes wake up just in time before the alarm rings. :) Of course, the alarms still help if I ended up sleeping later than usual the night before.

We do use the alarms on our phones and these are a huge help. It would be way too easy to just keep sleeping if there wasn't any noise around.

The older one gets the less sleep it seems I need. I did use alarm clocks during my student days. But being rudely awaken by an unpleasant ringing eventually cause me to toss away that torture device that was very debilitating to my sanity. Now I rely on the natural rhythm of our sleep cycle. I have no problem waking up on the desired time I set myself to.

Haha! I guess it never struck me as being rudely awakened by a torture device (haha! ). But I was more worried that it would wake up everyone else in my dorm room before it wakes me up. Because my experience is something like: hearing this recurring sound in the background of my dream, and I'd continue hearing that for a while while my dream continued... until, after some time, I realize what the sound was - it's my alarm! I've been asleep this whole time, and was dreaming. And I wake up and wonder how long the alarm has been going before I realized what it was.
