In 1911 the famous painting, The Mona Lisa, was stolen from the Louvre. A poet named Guillaume Apollinaire, a friend of Picasso's, commented that Picasso might have been the culprit. Of course he wasn't but he was questioned by the police.
Picasso's real name is Pablo Diego Jose Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno María de los Remedios Cipriano de la Santísima Trinidad Ruiz y Picasso. He felt that his mother's name, Picasso was less common than Ruiz and he went by it but it wasn't his legal name. He was born in Malaga, Spain on October 25,1881. He died on April 8, 1973 at the age of 91.
At the age of 54 Picasso stopped his sculpting and painting to begin writing poetry and even wrote several surrealist plays. He wrote hundreds of poems but the language he used may have made them rather unpopular. He liked to write about excrement and sex.
What a character!
