It's Finally Happened

Oh thank you Lord, its about time. After 8 long months of waiting and trying my husband has finally gotten a job in Texas. I thought this day would never come but someone is finally going to give him a chance.
He was laid off his job from Colorado 3 mths after we moved here and has been looking for a job ever since. He was told he was over qualified, didn't have the correct certifications, didn't have the training they needed, ect. We think more that it was that he is close to retirement and they didn't want to hire someone that age as he might leave after a couple of years.
Finally, he found a company to take a chance on him. I am glad because we were talking about him moving back to Colorado to get a job and I would have to stay here. Now I wouldn't have minded having to sleep in a room with no snoring or noise but it would have been a little difficult keeping this house up by myself.
Have you ever had to wait this amount of time or longer for a job?

Oh thank you Valerie, that is awful that happened to you, I am so sorry. We had just bought this house because his work promised us he was safe when we moved and then laid him off. Its been tough but he has one now so we can get back on track.

i looked for a job for a little over a year, until I got a job in July. Unfortunately I lost it a month ago due to cuts. Thankfully, I'll be starting a training from home in a couple of weeks. It's not easy at all. It's a challenge to look for work for such a long time. I'm glad that your husband finally found something.

Yes, hubby has been in that situation in the past. His last job he got when he was 67 and it was a good run.

Well lets hope this one is a good run too, I don't want to have to go through it again, I'm getting too old for this.

Congrats. Glad that he found one. I think they find excuses not to hire people close to retirement also.

Oh wow. Good I am so happy for you and your husband. I'm sure that will be a lot of pressure off. What kind of place does he work at?

Thank you Faye, he is going to work with computers at a bank, hes been in computers for over 20 yrs so its all he knows. He was supposed to start in a town 35 min from us but they found him a spot right here in town so it makes it even better. He will be transferred to the other town when they get it all set up.

@FayeHazel I know, he is so excited to only have to drive 10 min from home. We live in a really small town so it was nice for them to find this spot for him.

That is rotten isn't it. My father had the same thing happen when he changed jobs in his late 40s early 50s. The jobs all wanted you guys even though my dad was a good worker. That must have been a rough 8 months for you guys. I am sure it was very upsetting to your husband. I have heard of people not being hired because they are over qualified and that just makes no sense to me at all. Better schooling and knowledge should be welcomed in a job!

@cintol when my father had a stroke and couldn't work he went without income for 3 years before he could get any help! I was so disgusted by that. A man who never took a handout a day in his life hit 50 and had a store and couldn't work and no one would give him any help. That is just so wrong!
When I was a kid he and my mother bought a piece of land for very low priced. They cut all the weeds which were taller then my head and then kept it mowed weekly. There was a house that was full of rat dropping and urine and smelled terrible and was full of garbage and books and everything you can imagine an old hermit never threw away. They tore it down and cleared the lot. Everyone in the neighborhood was glad to see the eyesore gone!
When he had the stroke he sold that land for a large amount of money. He used that to live off of for the next 2-3 years until he was approved for disability. I just can't imagine what people will do who have that happen to them and have no land to sell and can't get any help. It makes my heart hurt thinking about how scared people must feel in that situation.

@shaggin That was a terrible thing to happen to your family, that is a long time to be without any help. Disability takes forever to get and sometimes you try for years just to be denied. Good thing he had that land to sell but he should have never had to do that in order to survive.
I have known people to lose their houses when these things happen because they can't get help, this is where our system has to change. People who truly need the help in these situations should be able to get it without losing everything. It is not their fault that this comes about. It is very scary to not know where your going to get the money to keep your households going.

The toughest part was having no insurance but I had saved some money from when we sold our house and moved here so we used some of that. It was nice for someone to finally give him a chance here. I don't understand why they wouldn't want someone with experience other than the fact they feel they need to pay them more and they are looking for cheap. My husband took a huge pay cut but at least he can work back up to it. I would gladly hire older people if I had a company, at least their work ethics are much better than kids today and the knowledge they carry would be worth it.

Not me personally, no. But my husband was hurt ten years ago and didn't work for eighteen months. A few months ago his hours were cut in his department so now we're thinking it might be better for him to apply for disability benefits. We were hoping to not do that but he's not making much right now and he's older too.
Congrats to your husband. So your currently living in Texas then?

@cintol my husband is letting me do the initial work too. He lost his leg ten years ago, and that's why he wasn't working the eighteen months. He got his job once he was able to go back to work but didn't get any money when he was off. Or, he got money for a period of time but not that long.
He had a blood clot in his thigh that went unnoticed for too long. Because he's minus a keg were hopeful that he will get disability sooner than most, but that remains to be seen. He used to average 25-30 hours but everyone's hours for cut a few months ago and his is down to about fifteen per week .

@MarshaMusselman Oh my, he has been through a lot, I don't see why he didn't get disability while he was going through all of that. Wow, 15 hrs, how do they expect you to live on that few of hours. It amazes me that so many are living on literally nothing in this country but yet the ones who need the help can't get it. Its disgusting
I wish the best for your husband and I really hope he gets the disability that he needs. I can only tell you that when he is ready to look for a disability lawyer, some work on contingencies and only get paid if you win. It makes them work a little harder, don't go with Freedom Disability or those type, they are losers and don't care.

Thank you and yes, we moved here one year ago next week.
I am sorry they cut his hours, it sucks when we get older and this happens because it is so hard to get something with someone else. My husband wants me to look into disability as well but it takes so long
to go through the process. I wish your husband the best of luck if he applies for it.

@cintol i hope so too that my son will not get fed up with the many requirements of the school, to which many of them question their financial standing.

@cintol I saw the same thing happening here in NC in public education. The GOP led legislature has done everything it can to run veteran teachers out of schools so they can hire newly minted teachers right out of school for much less pay.

Your lucky and it is hard. You wouldn't think the computer world would be so hard to find a job in but when you have more experience you make more money so they want the younger ones out of college that they can mold and pay less to to start out.

Yes, when your over qualified then you earn more money which is what they don't want to pay. Its a catch either way and usually not in the good one. He will take a huge pay cut to work this new job but I told him to just get his foot in a door some where and once he shows them his worth, maybe he will be able to work back up to where he deserves to be.

Thank you, he loves his new job and is enjoying going to work every day again.
I understand why the snores are welcoming on the weekends, I still listen to them every night and
told him I may take my own room when our daughter and grand daughter move out.
