Not what I wanted to wake up to on the Sabbath

I come from a long-line of "Freethinkers." Freethinkers, like Robert Ingersoll, James Fergus and and Mark Twain, are principled people who accept the possibility that God does not exist, separate from our thoughts about what is right and what is wrong. But I am also half-Jewish and half-Protestant by birth, and deeply respect both Jewish and Christian traditions. When I read this morning that a shooter had opened fire at Tree of Life Jewish Synagogue in Pittsburgh PA, I felt sick. Saturday is the Sabbath for Jews, and this means that someone opened fire on a bunch of people worshipping their God. Was it a terrorist? A disillusioned former Congregant? A "crazy" person? I'll be following the story. But to engage in violence toward anyone while they are worshipping their God is disgusting.

The shooter yelled “all Jews must die” or something to that effect. Then the moron president said that the synagogue should have had armed guards.

I went to read it after reading your comment. I keep thinking can our president get any dumber and he seems to read my mind and take it as a challenge.

I read that too. "All Jews must die." Did the "President" really say that about armed guards? Places of worship are places of peace, love, and inclusion. Armed guards should not be a part of the picture. I hope he expressed sadness for the victims.

From the sound of things was just a person that just hated Jewish people. Rough week, and hoping this is not really what we are becoming. These types of terrorism seem to be increasing. They are all homegrown or our own people doing it too. Why are we so worried about the middle east and caravans when we can't even keep our own house clean?

This is terrible news and would be terrible if a gathering did or did not worship God. Whenever and wherever this happens it is truly awful. I often think that the person doing the shooting has to have a mental health problem, but indoctrination can also produce skewed and faulty thinking. Were many people hurt?

@TheHorse It has to be, surely. I had no idea this had happened, but have not yet looked at the International news.

A shooting anywhere is terrible. But to me, it's especially galling at a house of worship.

I used to drive past that temple every day when I worked in Oakland. Right now the city is stunned - no one ever thinks that it is going to happen in their neighborhood until it does. This happened on a smaller scale in 2009 but only police officers were killed.

It could be a terror attack, or an insane person's act. Whatever it is, it is a blot on the whole humanity!

Any violence is disgusting and unpardonable. But violence in place of worship while people are in there, is provocation, and destruction of peace.

@TheHorse People have particular knack of being not peaceful or shunning peaceful solutions, if you'd noticed. Ever wondered why? Like in Kashmir, I say give governance of Kashmir for 5 years to kashmiris seeking independence from both India and Pakistan, 5 years to India and 5 years to Pakistan, it gives Kashmiris an idea about which country they want to be with. Once the fifth year is completed, let them vote which side. Why have silly wars and terrorism, and deaths of soldiers who don't know what they are dying for? Why waste all that money at the border, while people go hungry and cold in this country? Beats me.

@vandana7 Would it come down to religion? Does Kashmir have more Muslims? More Hindus? More Christians?

That is true since some people have this bad habit to ruining the privacy of people who go to a church, mosque and a synagogue to pray and worship the Lord. It is a shame that one fool had to go kill some innocent people who were worshipping the Lord in spirit in truth.

I agree with those who say ANY killing of innocent people is disgusting. But there's something about killing people in a house of worship that is especially disgusting to me.

@TheHorse Hi, I will make a comment here about what happened in the Synagogue in Pittsburgh also happened here in Jerusalem. It was a terrorist attack against Jews. There are many out there that do not know anything about us so they make up lies and find people to follow them and lots of times there are Jews that are not certain in their beliefs so they follow the wrong one. Here in Jerusalem or all over Israel when we have terrorist attacks it turns out that it is someone that could have been fired for some reason and so they come back and want revenge and want to murder Jews. Here it was a religious Synagogue here while men were praying morning prayers and someone came in and starting murdering them. It was very very sad. We have had Arabs that dressed up as religious Jews that murdered Jews. We have had those ramming cars into crowds and we have had stabbing attacks in the Old City in Jerusalem also in Judea and Samaria and on the roads. There are those that rejoice when they murder one of my People or they throw candy and pay the families. So, yes these are terrorist attacks and yes Saturday is our Sabbath and very holy day for us Jews. Something has to be done about it so it does not continue.

All God's are same. Actually GOD is one. We called him by different names. No one has the right to do such types of unfair things whether they believe in GOD or not. Really it's ridiculous.
