sweepers in indian household...

October 28, 2018 2:04am CST
Since my childhood I always wondered are we fair enough in the way we treat our sweepers.. Being brought up in an indian household I have always noticed the way we treat our cleaners,we dont touch them and always maintain a distance.. I think this is what we are passing on since generations. It bothers me and I always feel bad about it.

Yes it was system in every part of India, don't touch sweepers. They were not allowed to enter in house. But now situation is changed. Sweeper are also high profile. Here is my city they are using bike to come for work also wearing fine dress.

@Prabhu Singh, reservation available to this class but its benefit is going to person who are already quite wealthy. Their children are getting coaching at reputed instituation and getting marks more 80% exam. So how a person who are doing sweeping job can selected for government job or for higher education.

I think this behavior has been there for generations and children just pick up the habit from the elders.

Well, I suppose it was the same in Europe 200 years ago, but the world has evolved since.

We have a person who does the cleaning in our home everyday and we treat her like a part of our family. We helped her during the time her daughter got married and spends time chatting with us and my mom especially. She is very slow due to health issues, but we allow her to work at her own pace. It all boils down to how you choose to respect another human being irrespective of their profession.

Maybe this is peculiar to where you are. Am sure many people would reject offer to become cleaners in such a place. I am not sure if this is a general problem though...i stand to be corrected.
