They're In Your Water

I have a patient complaining of pain. She has an order for Morphine 2 mg every four hours as needed for pain. I go get a vial of Morphine. I check it against the order. The vial is 4 mg, and the order is for 2 mg. HMM. So I give the patient half of the drug. What shall I do with the other half? I can think of many ways to solve this problem, but I won't bore you with them. The way the hospital solves the problem? They say "Waste it down the sink." WHAT?? Don't they know that this contaminates our water supply? Don't they know this is harmful to our environment and ecosystem? Don't they know they can be FINED for doing this? Yes. They know. Millions of drugs are wasted in our (and your) water supply each and every day. Not just by hospitals, but Nursing Homes, Doctor's Offices, Schools, Health Departments, and even some people's homes. All kinds of drugs. And we wonder why we are not feeling well? Some of the drugs we put into our water system breaks down into the tiniest of particles that CAN NOT be filtered out. This is why it is AGAINST THE LAW to waste drugs that way. However, the hospital requires that we do this. We have to have a documented witness, AND there is a camera to watch and make sure we do it. WHY? I asked just that question, because I am outraged about this. They were honest, and told me why: "The cost of the fine we would receive IF we get caught is a lot less than the cost of wasting the drugs properly." Wow. This is a facility who's mission statement is "Above all else we care about health and human life." Really? Do they? This is going on nation wide. Drugs are in your water. Tap water, bottled water, it doesn't make any difference. They're in there. I wrote to my local Department of Health, and they said they would look into it, but I have heard nothing back. That was 2 years ago. Maybe they got a fine. I don't know, but nothing is fixed. Please get this out there, and if you care that you and your children and their children are being poisoned every day, let's figure out a way to stop this. Thank you.

They call that a health system. It is really a sick system. If they are doing that, what are other industries doing. God help us!

If you really want to know, there is a ton of info out there about industrial waste. It would put your stomach in knots and its literally killing us slowly.

In Ireland, people can return unused medicines to their pharmacy, who pass it on to the Health Service for incineration. The service is also available to hospitals, nursing homes, etc. My water supply originates in a spring on the other side of our valley, which is situated on a hillside above any agricultural activity, and reaches my house by gravity alone, so I am fairly confident of my water quality.

Then your water is probably very clean and delicious! That is wonderful.

@NormanDarlo Water should come from the earth instead of a bunch of pipes and chemicals. Mother Earth knows how to clean!

@cindiowens I used to live in the town, and noticed the improvement in the water as soon as I moved here 17 years ago!

I know about companies dumping their wastes into the environment - but oh gosh I didn't even think about the medical industry. Surely it is nation wide and world wide . It becomes (already is) a domino effect - goes into our water, into us, animals, vegetation . . . ugh - and industries really don't care about anything except the money that goes into their pockets.

@cindiowens I hate to say we are doomed - but that's basically what it is - and humans are literally doing it themselves. I feel like we are in a time where everything is just completely out of control and almost to the point of no return. There is a whole host of health issues out there . . . more than likely it is because of all this carelessness - and years of it.

@much2say Sad but true. I'm afraid it will continue until there is no one left. Or until there is some kind of divine intervention.

It is always a matter of money, they do not care of people, they only want to avoid to spend money, it is a shame.

@cindiowens I fully agree, because soon the planet earth will be so poisoned not to allow humans to live here anymore.

Thank you for getting the word out. We can talk to our doctors about this and nursing homes. We can write letters to medical boards. We should all be worried about this.

@cindiowens At least you’ve let it be known. Thank you for for shouting out. Now we know what’s going on.

I read a story about how they did tests in California, and the water supply was riddled with Zoloft. People just don't bother to dispose of their medicine properly. However, I guess I'm surprised the medical world is so irresponsible.

I know that is true, but some don't care because they don't KNOW. People need to be educated on what is going on in their environment.

Wow. So my "safe disposal" of old pills basically ends up in the toilet? I could've done that myself!!!

There are some out there who dispose properly for a fee, or they say they do, who really knows? Everyone is in the money business you know.

I hear ya. I've asked several times the best way to dispose of medicine and have yet to receive a really good answer. It really worries me thinking what all gets dumped into our earth to be recycled in our water and food.

Things are terrible everywhere, I know. I don't watch the news. It steals my joy. I am sorry to hear that. People are cruel.
