Aussie 'Morning Tea'

November 7, 2018 10:08am CST
In Australia, 'Morning Tea' is a term to describe an event, a visiting-with a friend or friends, a 'bring-a-plate' (with food in it) to share among the morning tea-ers while we talk. In many cases, exchange pleasantries. The timing of such an event is usually mid-morning-- hence the name. Usually, the formalities typically consist of speeches, teaching, lectures. It varies also with farewells and tributes to a friend or loved ones we come to gather to pay our respects to. Recently, a lady-friend at work had planned a Morning Tea together-- just for a chat and get together while we sat in the lounge (living room) and our children played in the backyard. At organized Morning Tea events , there are always dainties, sweets, and favourite slices to snack and enjoy with a cup of tea or Nescafe, Moccona or Instant. There's no time to make cappuccino, latte, machiato or Caffè d'orzo espresso, unless we hire a barrister to make them while we chat and drink. In most cases, I've only been in funerals, scheduled Bible Studies in which, morning tea follows afterwards. Have you organized a 'Morning Tea' out of the ordinary to catch up with some special friends?

We call biscuits, "bickies". Yes, I suppose, chockie bickies are one of the morning tea treats.

I'm having one tomorrow with the ladies from my church at one of their homes. It's a time for a little Bible teaching and chatting.

I have a friend who will get together with for a morning tea type visit. Nothing large, though.

No, but I've gone to many afternoon high teas. Here, we usually have bagels, coffee, cakes, pastries, and fresh fruit at morning get-togethers. Looks very inviting, I must say.

We have nothing similar to a "morning tea", we can meet around coffee and pastries more than tea.
