Bought a turkey

While we were gone to buy Bob's prescription, we got some other things, including a frozen turkey. I would like two or three more at the price we got. So, we came home, hubby went to take a nap, and I cleaned the freezer on the refrigerator. Got it all organized. I still had to put the turkey in the chest freezer, though. I cleaned and organized it last week. While cleaning up things I found some chili, and some garlic broth, and some ground meat. It is all simmering together and will be our supper. I love finding meals all ready to just heat and eat.

I love meals like that. I used to fix twice the recipe and freeze half. I used to be very organized.

I still cook like I have seven or eight people here. I need more freezer space.

@GardenGerty...... Better to have too much than not enough.

Sometimes I miss Thanksgiving mornings, me half asleep, hearing hubby busily plunking the turkey into the oven, figuring how long to bake it.

@andriaperry @GardenGerty We still have Thanksgiving. Its just hubby and me so it feels like any other day except I make the effort to put out English and Bavarian china. The last couple of years we have stuffed a squash with seasoned cornbread and then had tasty sides. I make a decent pie crust so we generally have a pie on the side- pumpkin or yam pie sweetened with dates or like this year, apple with cran raisins. This year we plan to have a lentil loaf with a spicy tomato sauce over it and mushrooms stuffed with seasoned bread crumbs, wheat germ and parmesan cheese. We'll walk the property and talk about all those that we are grateful to for us getting through another year.

I will season it and cook it in the roaster. I wonder if turkeys live in your country? Are they considered a farm crop?

@GardenGerty I am not so sure. But turkeys are rare here. Perhaps you can find it as a dish from the expensive hotels.

It's time I cleaned out our fridge. For some reason, over a period of time, a large lump of ice forms at the back and I have to defrost it from time to time.

I had that happen when this fridge was brand new. It seems to have something to do with air flow and drainage of the evaporation. I remember when they always had to be defrosted, like every other month.

@GardenGerty I remember that too, and chipping away at it with an ice pick to hurry up the process. I think I even used a hair blower on it.

I need to work on doing more of that, and freezing smaller portions. I believe I have one more container of chili frozen.

@andriaperry I need to get into the home canning. You have convinced me, along with personal experience, that I may not always be able to rely on a freezer.

@GardenGerty I learned to do it when I had trashy people in the rentals and I stayed on a property working all the time, I have good people now but the cooking continued. I used to have bean day, I cooked three or four type and froze them. I always make extra chili, soup or stew. I do home can a lot more too.

Always nice when good is already prepared and you just have to heat it up. Turkey is a good price this time of year.
