Whenever my father get home drunk, I always think first of his health. His 59 years old, I’m trying to tell him about the effects of what is going to happen to him when he don’t stop drinking. Whenever he’s knees are aching, he takes colchicine. Probably, the aching is because of the uric acid crystal crystallizing in his synovial joint, that’s what causes the fiery sensation on his knees. I don’t get why he don’t stop, he knows the consequences but why can’t he stop? What am I going to advice? I’m out of words trying to simply persuade him to stop.

I can understand your problem. Some people would just not listen until they will realize it for themselves

Well I think that is already has an attachment to it already that is why it is hard for him to stay away from that. I think he is the only one who can decide to stop because I believe that the more you convince him out of it the more they will resist following you unless he comes to a point that he sees it as his addiction and decides to go away.

My father used to be a chain smoker since I was still in elementary after I graduated in elementary he stop doing it. My mother use to persuade him too stop. Now, the major problem is about his drinking problems, I wanted him too stop but he wont. I guess I can do that much but rant.

@dave121495 So he has a tendency to be addicted to something. I think he just gave up smoking to drinking now. I think it was not your mom who convinced him to stop smoking but himself. Addiction is something hard to remove from our system it is a conscious effort on the part of the addicted person to acknowledge it and decides on his own to stop it. Forcing him to stop may even get it worse. I say gentle persuasion may work at times or self realisation may provoke him to decide to stop.

@dave121495 You or his friends could persuade him to join AA. Many have benefited from it

@dave121495 Many hard core drunkards joined them and now they are helping others. Do not give up that easily. Sad that your father has no one who can persuade him to join. It is mostly friends that do that.

I think in this situation the only one could help is himself. I'm just only there to tell the situations and consequences to him.

I feel sorry for your father. But drinking is a way of socializing in our country. Maybe he finds satisfaction in hanging out with friends this way. I know you are concerned as a good son.

If he has a drinking problem, he may need some help as it is a difficult addiction to stop.

@dave121495 If he can do it by himself, that is great. If he can't, then he should get some help.

@dave121495 That's how it is. The same goes for smokers. Only they can decide for themselves when they want to kick the habit.

i believe you can say something 'horrible' to him, like the complications of the illness he has.

That's exactly what i was thinking but in the case of my father he is very hot tempered i might aggravate his aggressiveness. I'm thinking a way of saying horrible things in a way that it wouldn't compromise our relationship as a father and son.

If only we can stop them but sometimes they are hard headed and they just continue what they feel they are happy.
