A Christmas wreath for the Music Shack

Our outdoor concert will be held today week and we are slowly getting organised. We like to decorate the Shack a little bit and this year we’re having a Christmas theme. Mostly the decorations are cut out of cardboard then spray-painted. They are a bit rough and ready but they match the Shack which is itself a bit rough and ready. We have put the screen round the men’s urinal but I haven’t taken a photo of it yet. Before we could put up the screen we had to get rid of a bull-ant nest which has been created since the last concert at the base of one of the support poles. Bull-ants give a very nasty bite and are quite aggressive. We’ve made a wreath from a piece of flexible hose which is left over from when we converted the bus into a motor-home. It’s been covered with tinsel and looks quite effective. We’ll string more tinsel around the walls and that will be it. I'll put up another photo when we've finished decorating.

When I was a child, I was out playing in my grandmother's yard when I got tired and wanted to rest. She had a big banyan tree in her yard, and I went to sit at the base of it and ended up sitting in a bull-ant nest. Within seconds I was covered from head to toe with bull ants, and sustained multiple stings all over my body. My grandmother had to take me to the emergency room at the hospital just in case I had an allergic reaction to all the bites, or in case my throat started swelling shut and I had difficulty breathing. Fortunately, I did not have any allergic reaction to the bites, but needless to say I was in quite some pain for a while. The hospital gave me some topical ointment to rub on the bites, as well as some medicine to take to help relieve the stings and swelling.

That would have been awful! The bites really hurt. I was bitten last year so we knew to look out for them in that area. I don't even want to think about having multiple bites.

@JudyEv It was the second worst bite/sting event that ever happened to me. The worst was when I stepped on a hornets nest when I was a kid and got stung by dozens of hornets all over my face.

Very nice fast wreath. I wonder if your Bull ants are the same as our Fire Ants. I have heard to put diatomaceous earth in the next.

Possibly they are similar if not the same. I think fire ants eat anything in their path don't they? Or is that a different type of ant?

You are so creative, this wreath looks very nice. I would give you some branches cut from my holly tree to decorate. This year is full of red berries.

Holly branches and red berries would have been lovely. I've cut out two cardboard Christmas trees and will decorate them.

I'm sure the Shack will look very festive with all the decorations and everyone will enjoy a good time. Those Bull-ants could have caused some problems if you hadn't found them.

If we had carried on we would have been bound to be bitten. I got bitten last year so we were on the lookout for them.

They can be made as big or as small as you want within reason and the ends joined in a circle with some tape.

That is a clever wreath and attendees will be glad the bull ant are nowhere near the urinal. What kind of music will you have this time?

The artiste for this show is Emily Barker who was born and raised in a town just half an hour down the road. Her name is Emily Barker. She wrote and performed the theme tune for the TV shows Wallander and The Shadow Line and has since written music for a couple of films. We saw a special showing of one, Hector, in her home town and the film was very good as was the music. Her music is mostly folk I guess.

@JamesHxstatic She has really come into her own over the last decade I suppose. Luckily she is coming home for Christmas and asked if she could do a concert here. We don't usually have bands twice unless they are really good but she has done both an indoor and an outdoor concert for us before. Numbers are down a bit but everyone gets very busy over Christmas. We have a bit over 70 coming and may get a few more at the last minute.

I've taken a photo so might use it later or might wait till we have the stage lights up as well. We are trying to do things ahead of time as there is always plenty to do at the last minute.

Sometimes these sorts of decorations can cost quite a lot and the money that comes in all goes to the musicians so we don't want to spend more than we have to.
