Contentment In Life

I have a very positive outlook on life. I am usually content with what I have and generally very happy. I believe an attitude of gratitude is what has brought about this change in my life.
I wasn't very happy or content before.. I was very ambitious.. I wanted to be promoted to the highest position, wanted the best house money can buy. I took up so many courses to keep up with the Joneses.
However, nothing brought me happiness. I tried very hard to change my attitude to life, to people around me, and worked on them night and day.
I discovered that the smallest things in life are the ones that bring you joy. I believed that you could change your state of mind and here I am..
I just wanted to share this here because I read so many unhappy posts. I just want to say that if I can do it, anyone can do it. Everyone has a right to be happy and its in your hands.
What do you think?

Ha ha...looks like you are quite like me. LOL. I can't say I was ambitious though. I did not want the best positions either. All I was targeting was "food, clothing, shelter, medicines, and enough to clear my indebtedness to different people in life". God gave me enough, and now I want a tad more to help others feel better about their lives. Looks like god is giving me that as well.
I always disliked large homes. Too much botheration of cleaning and repairs. I felt each person can have separate studio apartment like unit. In addition if it is a large family a central hall, a dining hall, and a common kitchen could work. I had a very small apartment about 490 sft. I was extremely happy with it. My dad however likes to live life the king size, and to top it all, he is a hoarder. Today too we live in small flat/apartment, 1250 sft, but it is filled with junk. I dread the thought of cleaning it all up post dad.

@vandana7 Now I hate all those things wanted before.. life has come a full circle.I love to share what I have too. Maybe we re much alike now. I live in a huge house and I am waiting to leave the city and find a small house in the midst of nature.. with or without the luxuries of life.
I can relate to how you feel about hoarding..
Live life to its fullest is my motto in life..
Glad to have met someone who this this way.

Just like you, I also simplified my life, because it is what my husband and daughter wants.
I didn't even pursue my dream of working in Canada because I want us to migrate there. However, they stopped me and said, they don't want to live in Canada. They just want to be just here with our immediate families and relatives.
Thus, I heeded them and just got a job here again and live a simple life.
I am happy just living simply.

@SIMPLYD from what I have known you over the years I am sure you are a happy person. What are dreams ? Just illusions prancing about like reality.. happiness is what you find where you are.. Bloom where you are planted. I believe if we are not happy now, we will never be able to find it even when all our dreams come true.

In today’s world we’re material things do get in our way to blur the meaning of what happiness is all about. We tend to attached ourselves with those we believe would make us happy but in the end we just seek more of it until we feel numb of them feeling more void and uncontented in our life. Most things that will make us contented are those simplest things in life. We just need to appreciate their presence in our lives.

I gave up my ambition about 25 years ago. I went to a job and left my career, it was the best move I ever made. I concentrated on family and the things that are really important in life and I have never regretted my decision, I took a more than 50% cut in pay but so many good things came my way as a result. I don't need things, I need my family and friends.

@BelleStarr This sounds like words out of my mouth.. Honestly I don't regret any of the decisions I made, throwing up my career and focusing on my family I agree was the best. Things don't make you happy at all.. they are a passing fancy.

I think that you are right. The small things and little pleasure of life are the most important. I think that it's impossible to have a perfect life, with no problems, with no sadness, but this does not mean that it's an unhappy life. Be happy of what you have and do not try to have always more, this is the secret to live happy.

@LadyDuck True no one's life is perfect.. but it doesn't take perfection to be happy. Its like hanging your happiness on magical event in the future while the present passes you by in such unhappiness. Its better to love what you have than spend your life yearning for what may not be.

Nice to hear this.
I had always an attitude of gratitude and was thankful for the blessings.
Balance in life is a must for happiness though we can still work hard and have goals.
I have seen many very wealthy but most were enslaved by money and leading a miserable life.

There has to be a level of contentment Shiva. I mean as long as my next meal is not certain, it is difficult to locate that real happiness. For a tad longer lasting happiness, uncertainty must disappear. People tend to compete and grow much more than that secure future. Few realize that all it takes is a hold up to lose most of it.

@vandana7 What we think is ours will soon be with someone else. So let us keep only those we need for this life and a bit to pass on to whoever. And let them carry on, do their part.
Warren Buffett said about how much to pass on to kids "enough money so that they would feel they could do anything, but not so much that they could do nothing" - siva

You have hit the nail at right point. And many who have lived life to a considerable amount in terms of age and have gained experience and maturity will totally agree. We keep finding happiness in big moments and get upset while so many little joys are around us which we overlook.

@arunima25 So true, Glad you feel this way. Waiting for those big moments that may or may not happen is letting life pass you by while you are busy crying.. There is so much happiness around us for the taking.

The weird thing I found out was that it is human nature to want to expand. Settling down makes one sad.

@yoalldudes True human nature is greedy .. and look at our world today.. some are so impoverished because of the greed of others.

@sofssu Simple, contented life is lovely though. I dont understand why the need to be greedy, right? Especially at the expense of others.

@sofssu I think that your positive attitude has helped you a lot. You did not get snowed in and buried by your challenges. You prayed and you got your shovel out and dug your way out. Am I right?
