Keeping electrical cords safe

When we first started having outdoor concerts on our property, the sound system was monitored from the Music Shack itself. Within a few years, Vince wanted to be able to control it from a point a short distance from the Shack. However the cords would all be lying on the ground where people walked up from their cars. This was not as safe as we wanted it to be so we dug a trench from the Shack to a point some ten metres away. We employed a couple of backpackers to help with the digging as, although it was sandy, it was hard work for us. We laid a 4 inch diameter PVC pipe in the bottom of the trench. There is a long length of rope which stays in the pipe so we can pull light and sound cords through. The concert is tomorrow but at the moment we can’t get a peep out of the sound system. We need JJ (@myklj999) here desperately. However tomorrow’s bass player is also a sound engineer so hopefully he will be able to sort out our problems when he arrives. Please keep your fingers crossed for us. The photo shows the hole in the ground and the PVC pipe. You an see by the colour of the earth where the trench has been laid.

Wow you're importing lamby to do those things huh? I wonder how much is the rate plus travel expenses. Those wirings must be old.

We have dozens of backpackers in our town. They work in the vineyards and orchards so it isn't hard to get someone out for a day's labour. We pay them the going rate and pick them up from wherever they live in town.

We had an outbuilding in our yard at one home that we lived in, and I remember the year that my husband dug a trench to lay piping so that he could run electrical out to that building. I didn't help him, but I know that digging that trench was hard work, but so worth it in the end as it was much safer then all of the exposed cords lying on the lawn. I hope that you can figure out the sound issue-maybe try to think like a JJ would think.

JJ says he has the same problem sometimes and it is usually something really simple. We always start with 'what is the simplest thing it could be'. I'm sure it will get fixed by tonight.

Working out the sound system is the hardest part of the whole exercise.

That's a great idea. And did it cost a lot for making that?

We already had some leftover PVC pipe and the bricks so it was just a few hours labour cost for the help.

@JustBhem It's very safe and much better than having cords laying on the ground.

That was the first thing we checked - that all the 'on' switches that are supposed to be 'on' are actually 'on'.

@arthurchappell Some of the stuff stays in place now which helps a bit.

That's probably true - and sometimes it seems even more work to pack the stuff away again. Although everyone fits in the lounge it is a big area to sweep and mop after they've all gone, not to mention the lights to take down even though they weren't used and the sound gear to pack up and take back.

Wow, underground wiring, nice toilets, pretty soon you will be a place the whole area is going to want to rent out for concerts, not just the ones you do. Great job, I am sure you will be able to get those wires working properly soon.

It's not good to have electrical cords lying on the ground if you're going to have dozens of people walking over them. And they are unsightly too.

Yes, I think it is good to have your own control of the electrical cords and can do it anytime you need to fix them.

If someone had an accident we could get sued. Although we do have insurance it wouldn't hold up if we were thought to be negligent.

@JudyEv You are right even though you have insurance you do not want people to think you are not good people and do not care what happens to others. You both are good people and so you wanted to find a solution.
