Into the top five I go with this series of songs that were dynamite covers of songs that were already great. Here's a no-shocker for today's entry. In fact, I mentioned this one in a countdown not too long ago! Here's today's great cover of a great song. #5: Pale Blue Eyes - R.E.M. In my R.E.M. countdown I used another Lou Reed song that they covered, "Femme Fatale." This is one of those "flip a coin, see which one you use" songs. Truthfully, this doesn't sneak by with just one play in the iPod (nor does "Femme Fatale"), so I thought I'd highlight this one (given that FF was already used a month ago). And, as I said then, we missed a wonderful thing because R.E.M. did NOT do an entire Lou Reed tribute. This is a simply amazing version...and, at the risk of being thrown out of the rock and roll club, I prefer this version to the Velvet Underground original.
