How Real are Work-from-Home Jobs?

I've been on the hunt for a stable work-from-home job since last month when I resigned from my 4-year corporate job, and so far, got nothing.
I've grown tired of the daily commute plus traffic jams in the city, heavy workload and low pay. Here I am, trying several websites that talk about working from home. How real is getting paid doing a virtual task?
Not that I'm a cynic, but I'm curious. Totally.
Any thoughts?

Work from home jobs are real jobs - at least some of them are. I worked from home for years and still do some, although I am retired.
Have you tried ratracerebellion.com or realwaystoearnmoneyonline.com ? Both of them check the jobs they list and have a good variety of them.

It's difficult to find a client who will pay on time and of the right amount. Several years back, I had a taste of writing blogs for a website, and it didn't pay well so I went back to corporate.
Yes, I'm looking for a client that will hire a VA (virtual assistant) similar to the offline EA or PA. I have this cable net that I don't exactly get to maximize its usage every month. It's just lying here and well, except for Netflix, which I'm really thankful for, I don't get my money's worth out of this cable net... So why not use it, right?

I too have attempted to get better-paying jobs online but I am not sure that it is really possible. I once applied for information because the job sounded so good. Then I found out I had to pay some money and I had to attend an online course and I just don't have time for that. I do write for an online site it is like content writing and I do get paid something every week because I also put in the time and effort but no big bucks.

@yuj___ you read my mind. I have instructed adults and children in English, however, the one place offering is in Beijing and my work hours would begin at about 6:30 PM to about 9 PM which is not bad at all but this is the time when my cat Sid is hoping in and out and other things are going on which can be disruptive and I cannot stop lessons for that. I got as far as telling them that perhaps is things changed I might sign on in the new year. We will see. In the meantime, the fight for the passive income continues.

Plus the SEO work, right? with the white hat thing etc, etc. So much to consider. I'm looking at having like a virtual assistance gig, but I'm still checking out these websites.
I'd have to agree with what you said about shelling out some money, attending an online course and that's expensive plus time consuming. We're looking for a work-at-home job that pays, yet it's asking for us to pay it first. Where's the income in that, right?
Have you considered teaching ESL?

I'm leaning towards becoming a virtual assistant or a live chat rep... There are tons of websites, but to get in, I'd have to either reside in the US or I have experience working on livechat platforms that are currently in use on websites. Time to update my skill set!

I think so, too. However, there is a significant movement from offline work to online work these past months since e-commerce is alive yet again. I'm thinking of opening a small store offline, while I have this online work that I can do let's say 2-3 hours a day. That's not bad..

@nawala123 True. Data entry can really be boring to do, but with the right skill set, it could be done fast.

A lot of the writing sites have high minimum payouts so it's hard to earn from them.

That's the thing... I tried to tell people about it, but my post got well, deleted. I think the system thinks I'm recruiting. That could be the effect, but that wasn't what I had in mind. It was more of proving that there are legit work from home jobs that we can land.

Online business is good. And I have seen some people that claims to be making it big online but I have not gone on that road personally.
However if you will like to make it a job, I mean you really mean it to dedicate your time, then find out about freelancing for websites and blogs
Also find out about this site "fiverr"
