Can you read a book in a moving car?

Some people find that they get nausea or giddiness if they read in a moving car. This is due to the eyes and brain focussing and alternating between the fixed book and the moving surroundings. Although I haven't faced this I can't really read in a car for more than a few minutes. Can you read in a moving car? Any suggestions to feel comfortable when reading ?

You're not the only one. It's a common problem.

Yes, I have no problem with moving vehicles. if you can't read in the moving car, you can't read, just sleep or enjoy the view.

I am rarely a car passenger. If I am I usually end up babysitting our 2 children.

I used to read in moving vehicle but never experienced any problem. May be it varies on people. However, it is advised that reading in a moving vehicle is not good for our eyes.

What will it do to the eyes?

@pitstop Since the vehicle is moving the letters in the books have some movement, which is not good for our eyes health.

@pitstop I seem to be ok if I read on the ferry or the train, though I can sometimes fall asleep while reading...

@pitstop I can read easily in the car. I have heard that many can't do this and I can't say I understand why. I mean I get it but I've never felt what these people have felt. My eyes are just looking down and focused on the book. In fact holding it in front of me doesn't bother me either. I'm sorry that I don't have any suggestions but when you said "This is due to the eyes and brain focusing and alternating between the fixed book and the moving surroundings" I'm wondering if this is if you're holding the book at eye level where you can see both the book and out the window. I wonder if looking down where your peripheral vision doesn't pick up anything else can help? Not sure though.

Great analysis. I'm sure the inner ear also can contribute to this sickness in susceptible people.

It is difficult to read a book in a moving vehicle, it could cause problems of eyes, neck and head. I do not read books like it. I even do not fiddle my my mobile phone, in a moving vehicle.

Not at all. I get far too dizzy, and I'm already susceptible enough to motion sickness as it is.

I often read in the car, and I don't experience any problems. My husband is always driving and when we are going on a long road trip I like to read while I am in the car.

I can't read in a car or bus but I can in a train or plane. In a car I really just have to sit and watch the scenery go by or I start feeling ill.
