My Christmas Cactus Bloomed!

Last year after Christmas, I picked up a good sized Christmas Cactus that was finished with it's cycle of blooms. I had no idea what color it was going to be, but was happy to pick it up for $1.50.
I had one in Ohio for years in my kitchen window and it bloomed for me every year for many years. I always wanted one after seeing the original Waltons TV movie. John Boy's mom had one that was huge and had bloomed every year since she was married.
This one was neglected by me all year, but in the early fall I brought it indoors as it still looked good and began watering it. Lo and behold it did bloom!
The photo is my actual plant!
Do you keep a Christmas Cactus?

Oh my gosh - my mother in law gave us a few of her random plants a couple months ago (they used to be in her kitchen) . . . and I didn't know what they were by name. One of this what you have here, but no blooms (just little green ball things at the end of the stems - could that be the start of blooms maybe?). Now I know - so I guess I have one .

@Jeanniemaries I just had no idea! I took a quick look at it - the "balls" do look a bit bigger - but they have been around for a while now. Late blooms perhaps? Now I can't wait !

@Jeanniemaries I remember your reasons for moving back to Ohio and totally understand. We are here now for 6 months and 1 day, so we won’t be killed by CT income taxes anymore. Our CT home will become our vacation home for 6 months, minus a day. Lol

It was a thrill, I've had quite a dry run in Tampa, just too midwestern to figure out Floridas growing cycles. But I'm back in business now that I'm back in Ohio for good.

Look at my last couple of posts---I have a Christmas Cactus for over 10 years--it blooms for Easter, Leap Year Day, Passover, Hannukah, Halloween and, oh yes, Christmas!!! Some blooms are pink, some white and some orange--I, also, have about 10 'pup' plants that for the first time this Christmas are blooming!!I LOVE Mother Nature!!

I have one too that I have had for about 13 years. It Bloom's twice a year a beautiful pink color. It has been in full bloom for a few weeks and they are finally starting to die on one side. The side towards the window is just starting to bud so I will turn that around once it does so we can enjoy it.

Wow, you got it for only $1.50? I think it's a really good price and now that it's blooming, it's even more beautiful. Maybe I could find one like that here. It's really beautiful.

@Jeanniemaries I wonder if we have that type of cactus here.

It was a close out price. They are apparently hard to sell when it is finished blooming because it takes a few months to rebloom.

@Jeanniemaries We just watched that show again last week-we do it every year. The quietness of the kids walking to the house reminds both my husband as well as myself, about how quiet our lives were as children.

I'm so pleased you remember that part of the Homecoming Christmas show. It made quite an impression on me. I love to pick up plants on sale! I like to buy an amaryllis or two to bloom in the winter. (indoors)

@Juliaacv I visited the actual town in Virginia and the school is much closer to the house that the show indicates. It's like just a block away almost kitty korner from their home. Also Ike's store is like a very short block away on the same side of the street, actually across from the school. Also there was another house very close on one side of the Walton home, but on the other there was a road and it looks spacious like in the TV show. That is practically all there was in the town back then, the school and the store and some homes. I had a friend who taught at the school years ago when she was a new teacher and she piqued my interest in visiting; so on a trip to my daughters home near Richmond, we stopped by and made a visit. Then last year I went again with my daughters family. They have a few more businesses now. We took a tour of the school both times. The first time I went Jim Bob still lived in the original home, but the second time I went the home was a museum. It was closed but we peeked in the windows and saw most of the downstairs rooms. At the Walton Museum which we went into near the school they have recreated TV sets with the original TV furniture. Very fascinating to me.

@Jeanniemaries It seems what I was thinking was a Christmas cactus was actually something else. The Christmas cactus in the southern hemisphere flowers around May.
