Busted my budget because of the plumber

For three days I have been without water as a tap (faucet) broke in the bathroom. I had to call the plumber (why is he called that? ) and he came, at last, today. He had to replace the broken parts and was here for an hour and, of course, needed paying and the only funds I have are those that I was going to use for gifts this Christmas.
Now, I'm sorry, but everyone will be getting only small inexpensive gifts
When did you last call the plumber?

I can do most simple plumbing jobs inside the house myself except when it's under the kitchen sink, or something that's too dirty for me. Plumbers are not that expensive here.

The other day you said you were good with scissors and an axe and now you are a plumber too?
Here anyone who comes to fix something in your home is expensive

@louievill Possibily though I hope it's a long time before I see him again and will forget to ask.
The whole pipe system in this block of flats needs replacing but I dare not think what an expense it would be

@mysdianait Im a DIY guy. There are informal settler colonies all around our private subdivision, my workers reside there so all I have to do is to go ask them fetch somebody who does not have a job at the moment, even if he just has basic knowledge or apprenticed, I could teach him what to do so long as he does the dirty job and I could help in the work so I don't get charged much.
Around 20 years ago, I had my plumbing reinstalled above ground with plastic PVC pipes and condemned the old under concrete, metal pipe system so it's really easy to trouble shoot.
Some plumber over there would be giving away large Christmas gifts this Christmas

Some time back now but they have always charged us a lot also.
A few times you will get the odd one that won´t charge you so much if you are lucky.

As I studied Latin I have the reply, it is called "plumber"(plombier in French) from Latin plumbum (lead), because Roman used lead in conduits and drain pipes. It's a long time that I do not need a plumber and I hope not to need one soon.

Thank you. @owlwings had already given the same explanation in his response so I have learnt something new here on myLot
Is your hubby able to fix things for you so that you don't need to call the plumber?

@LadyDuck I understand nothing about electrical things or plumbing. Yuo certainly save a lot of money by fixing things yourself. Well done you!
No problem that you didn't see his response. At least you confirm it to be the correct reason

@mysdianait Sorry I missed the comment by owlwings. I was not at home the 14th and I have read past posts in a hurry yesterday. I am the one who fixes things around the house, I fixed a broken faucet in the garden, I closed the central water, removed the old, installed the new. My husband is good in electronic stuff only. We both would never touch electricity, the rules are strict here.

I am useless with some things and plumbing is one of them. Electrical things are another.l Rather than do more damage I just call whoever should be called to fis the problem - and then I have to pay them of course

Darn! And I was so hoping for something large and expensive from Italy!
Never mind, I shall nibble the amaretti in the nice tin that I bought and think of you.
Water pipes used to be made of lead - plumbum in Latin - and a plumber was a 'worker in lead' (he used to do church roofs as well).

Well as you already have some amaretti, I would have had to think of something else for you anyway
If there was still a BR here you would get it. Thank you for explaining that as I would not have worked it out by myself

Oh that is awful. I can't manage without hot water and none at all these last days really upset my routine. The first thing I did was take a shower when he had fixed it.

Oh I remember when I was young that we had so many problems with burst pipes during winter. Fortunately that does not happen now or it would be a huge expence every year.

I don't have a husband - but I don't have a lot of laundry/stuff all over the place/sleepless nights due to snoring either
Sounds like you save a lot with yours being such an all-rounder

@Lignitecityabishek96 It didn't look like fun to me. He had to lie on his back to reach the parts that needed changing. He could only access them from under the sink,

Luckily I had some spare money but I had intended using it for gifts rather than that. Never mind and I guess it is a reminder that I should always have something ready just in case an emergency happens again.

I guess they call them plumbers because they fix the plumbing. Just a wild guess. Hmm, the last time I called a plumber. Well, back when I owned rental property, had one that always had finnicky plumbing. They always drained the wallet—but at least they made the sink drain too.

Yes I guess they could also have been called "drainers"

@mysdianait Indeed. They CAN drain the wallet like nobody's business. Especially if it is a weekend. And we all know all too well no drain ever gets clogged on a weekday.

It was a pity that you had to call a plumber however a water supply is essential. I had a new kitchen put in back in 2010. I hope you can afford all the Christmas presents you need. This summer my washing machine stopped working. I described what it was like on my phone to the maker of the washing machine. It was under direct drive guarantee for 10 years. So I had it mended for free. Though I had a call out fee to pay. It was hard to afford as I was paying for redecoration you see of the rooms in my home.

I fear that my washing machine will be the next problem. It is 12 years old and has started making strange noises I have a friend who has suggested I buy her mother's washing machine which is only two months old and she no onger uses it since she moved to stay with her daughter. However reading your post I realise that it would have no guarantee. That is something to consider too.
This year I had already decided to buy fewr and cheaper gifts than other years. Now I might have to remove some from the list unless I find offers somewhere. I will sort that during this week.
I couldn't have fixed the tap by myself and had no choice. I just hope nothing else will break before the end of the month.
