The year we had wood coming out our ears - meaning 'we had a lot'

I wrote about making a series of mistakes in one day and how these things often happen in threes. In the comments I said a few times that we don’t really notice good things happening in threes, only less positive things. However once we did have three things happen which were a bit of both. We have a tile fire in the lounge and we are continually looking for wood to burn through the winter. One year we thought we were going to run out of wood so we bought a ton of timber from a merchant. It had no sooner been unloaded and stacked away than we had a storm which blew down five trees on our property. So we had to saw them up and stack them away too. Each weekend outside our local supermarket, a community group will have a raffle. Through the winter, a popular prize is a trailer load of wood. A few days after the storm we bought a ticket in the raffle and won a trailerload of wood. So, although we had to pay for the first lot of wood, you could say it was three good things that happened in a short space of time. Photo is of our wood-shed.

I guess you won't have to worry about getting cold in winter.

Most of that year's wood is long gone. We bought another load this year as our house-sitter kept the fire going all day through winter.

Well Judy, this could be seen as "three good things", but is a storm that knocked out 5 trees a good thing? I do not believe so.

No that's true but there are plenty of young trees coming along to replace those that have come down.

I think your wood supply is more than ample. We use that expression too on occasion.

It is surprising how much you can get through in a winter.

Yes, that is Vince's doing. I hand it to him and he stacks it quite precisely.

I can't imagine running out of wood and being cold. We do have a reverse cycle air-conditioner but rarely use it. It would be expensive to run it all winter.

You can never have too much wood for winter.

@JudyEv We keep a small supply. We only use it on extremely cold days or if the electric goes out. The furnace and pellet burner are used mostly.

@wolfgirl569 Our son in Ireland uses mostly oil for heating and also buys 'logs' that are sort of pelleted.

You will certainly be warm this winter! I agree that things come in threes - both good and not so good.

@JudyEv Wood left too long gets spongy and not suitable for anything up north. I really find it difficult not saying “home” anymore.

We will be away for part of the winter so that will extend the life of our wood-pile

@DianneN That happened when we hired a pair of horses and a caravan in the Wilson's Promontory area in Victoria. The wood all just fell to pieces. You couldn't find any that would burn.

We just had a friend bring us a cord of wood. It was such a blessing since we were down to cutting and burning random scraps from an old chicken coop we'd torn down earlier in the year. I would LOVE to win a cord of wood! Hopefuly, we'll be better stocked and prepared next winter, with lots of wood. I love how organized your shed looks.

Some of the wood is 'curing' so it's sort of in sections. Vince knows which is which and I do when he tells me.

@Hannihar Yes, it is. We have another tree that has fallen on a fence that we still need to saw up so that will be a bit more to go in the shed.

I think you have posted a photo of your wood shed before which I loved. A log fire is just so much better than an electric one. You sure got a load of wood that time
