Again, there are so many good bands and singers that start with C. I went through all I could think of and I came up with many but was really having a hard time figuring out which might be my favorite. I came up with ones like Cheap Trick, Chicago both from my home state of Illinois, there is Canned Heat and The Cars, Cat Stevens and Ray Charles or Eric Clapton or the band he was once in Cream. Then I thought wow the one I have always felt should have been called the King of Rock n Roll, one of the first the one and only Chuck Berry.
He started performing regularly in 1953 although his first performance was in 1941 as a high school student. His career start playing Blues, and Ballads but since the White's in the area were listening to country he also played country.
In 1955 he had went to Chicago, met Muddy Water who introduced him to Leonard Chess of Chess Records who wanted him to make some country music. Chuck recorded his rendition of a country song called "Ida Red", you might have heard it...He changed the name of the song to "Maybellene".
In my opinion, the song that is pure rock n roll, is "Johnny B. Goode" The song was on the album " Chuck Berry is on Top", which was released in 1959. Although that was before my time, I love this song and many of the others Chuck Berry put out. I don't think the music I love would be the same without him.
If you never heard it you need to take a listen.
