A couple of days ago in the Bob Wills section of the "Battling Bobs" countdown I used "Silver Bells," which became only the second time I've used an instrumental. And just two days later, here I am, using another instrumental! Instrumentals were part of western swing, when people just wanted to get out on the dance floor and two-step. And, for today's song, Bob Wills provided the perfect music for that.
#2: Gone Indian
Bob Wills had been playing this old traditional Texas fiddle tune probably since he was a kid, but a full-blown recording didn't make it to vinyl until 1966. Well, asterisk: it was included as part of the "Playboy Medley" on a 1961 album (where I fell in love with it).
But in the years of the CDs and the Tiffany Transcriptions and Bear Family box sets, there are older renditions of Wills performing the song. And it's a smoking western swing ditty.
Trivia: the opening of "Gone Indian" is also the opening fiddle break of Wills' classic "Stay a Little Longer."

I remember so many old Bob Wills and Hank Williams songs on the juke boxes of west Texas cafes in the late 1940s and early 1950s.
