Speaking of Driftwood...

Canada
December 29, 2018 9:56am CST
I made this big Santa years after we left the house on the shore of Lake Ontario. While walking on the beach on Lake Ontario in a park in Hamilton I found a pretty big piece of drift wood. I took it home not knowing what I was going to do with it. Once it was dry, I cut one end flat and I saved the head shaped end to use. It was about two and a half feet tall, I drilled holes where I was thinking arms should be and used some strong wire to make the arms. I shaped the face with a nose ( a big nose) and made a couple of eyes. (Using my wood working tools.) I found a big piece of red wool and a friend had given me a mink coat that I would never wear but I would play with it. I was also gifted a bag of lambs wool right from the lamb who didn't miss it... I have a sewing machine and made a red coat with mink around the sleeves and on the hood of the coat, all they way to the bottom was decorated in mink. I made fake hands with mink too that were attached to the ends of the wire arms. The wool was used as the hair and beard on Santa. Held together forever with glue. I cut a square of pine and painted it red and attached it to the driftwood. By then I found a small child's white buggy and started looking for stuff to fill it with. I found many tiny things in a stash I have for “when I need them” and I visited charity shops for interesting tiny things. The buggy is full of fun tiny things and a small Christmas tree. The silver thing on his shoulder is a walking stick and the glittery thing on his waist is from my sewing stash. The final thing on this Santa was a green fake pine garland and a long string of red wooden beads. The glasses are just heavy wire painted gold. I sold a few that were as big as this Santa but not many, I sold them for $100. I have two that I loved and wanted to keep and I gave a few to family and friends as gifts. I know how to have fun playing with my art, but I don't make them anymore... What do you do for fun?

That is a wonderful Santa you made. I have been busy finishing up the year working online. For next year I want to arrange my time so that I will have time for art projects. I have been itching to start coloring and drawing so I have gathered all the materials and cannot wait to start. I know it will also be an inspiration for my coming work.

I have always been an artist but had to go to a high school class at night to figure how to carve without cutting myself. Your local school has night classes for next to nothing and if you want to be creative you might look for a class that interests you.

That turned out so neat. I don't think I could ever make something like that from imagination. I admire people like you and my daughter who are so creative. I love finding driftwood but have never made anything with it.

Not to long, it was a long time ago I'm guessing it took me a couple of days to make it after gathering everything I needed.I enjoyed doing it and still do enjoy my creative urges.
